Stock pedals.

Anyone here like some stock effects/od/ds pedals over their modded counterparts?

I recently picked up a DS-1 from Closed Eye and I've been fooling around with it on the clean channel of my Legacy and getting some suprisingly good results. I played around with it for a little bit and dialed in what sounds like a sweet spot on the thing, or at least settings that work very well with the amp.

I used to have a Rob Keeley DS-1 but I don't recall a whole lot about what it was like, I had it almost 4 years ago for a brief period.

I'm all for boutique/modded pedals but it's so easy for players to NOT spend a few extra minutes tweaking the controls on stock pedals and then saying they sound bad. Sometimes the results I get from simply turning knobs up "too high " or "too low" surprise me.

Re: Stock pedals.

Yeah, I liked the stock Boss CE-2 but hated the Keeley mod, so's I sold it. It was far less dynamic and the open, shimmery character was gone.

Re: Stock pedals.

I think probably 95% of players use stock pedals, just like most players use the pickups that come in a guitar

Forums like this were we replace pickups, electronics, own tons of pedals, mod stuff etc are the minority as far as most musicans go in the big picture

Re: Stock pedals.

Glad you like it!

That one you've got kicks loads of @ss, but I've owned about 5 DS-1's, and only two of them were good out-of-the-box. The first one I got was killer (back when I started playing) and that one in your possession is just something else. The other 3 were either okay or just plain bad.

Generally though, I play stock pedals. I think finding a great-out-the-box one is like a challange. They're all mass produced, but occasionally flukes slip by, and to me that's what makes getting pedals really fun!

The Rocktron Short Timer I got from Rich_S is just amazing and the only "mod" on that is to prevent the switch from popping. Tonally it is all stock and I LOVE IT!

Re: Stock pedals.

Glad to hear you like it - I guess you've been so busy playing it that you haven't been on the board much lately.

Re: Stock pedals.

I like the SD-1 stock, CH-1, the old OD-1, SD-2, DD-2 and DD-3. I have an old BF-2B that is stock as well, no need to mod that. The Wylde Overdrive is another good one left stock, so is the EVH Phaser. I love the Visual Sound stuff too. They may not be original circuits but what they do is great.

The DS-1 to me is really bad for my sound in stock form. I just cannot make it work. About 5 changes is all it takes to make it workable for me.

I was gonna ask you if the one I got was modded or something. I don't ever remember a stock DS-1 sounding quite this good! Maybe the fine variations in the values of the parts all lined up to be "just right" or Boss ran out of a certain component and used a substitute for a small run.

Sometimes I just don't have a whole lot to say, sometimes I do. Other times I should be doing something else and I'm on here instead. :D

IMO signature pedals are kind of like modded pedals right out of the box. That could be a good or bad thing. :D

I couldn't make DS-1s work for me for the longest time... but this particular one seems to be a sweet one, plus my amp loves this thing!
