Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

Hey everyone, finally have money saved up to get some new pup's. And I need some final advice.

From the responses I have gotten it looks like my final choices are:

JB/Bridge
Full Shred/Neck
AP2/Middle

The other setup mentioned was a

Custom/Bridge
PG/Neck
59/Middle

I'm leaning tords the JB/FS/AP2 setup

Is there any variations of these pups or do I just ask for a JB, Fullshred and a AP2 when I go to buy these pups??? Are they going to ask me any questions that I might need to know?? Is the AP2 the same pup as the Alnico2 Pro???

Do I want to stick with the 250k pots with this setup?? And will I want to replace these pots with new 250k pots. There not very sinsitive when adjusting them. Stock pos???

I will be getting a 5 way switch and was thinking about two 5 way switches. Or do I want to get push and pull nobs for maximum pup versitility??? I dont no exactly what push and pull nobs do?

PSR wiring: Depending on the switching combination I choose will I need to order the PRS wiring to match????

Well I think thats it for now. And thank you for all the help.

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

From your original post - Have you tried lowering the low e string polepiece and also, Fender makes a set of strings 9-40 that have the smaller low e (40 instead of 42).

No cost/low cost possible solutions.

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

What exactly is the polepeice I've raise and lowered my pups on the low E string side and bridge with no luck.

The stock hardware just doesnt seem to have much response to adjustments. (pups and pots)

The polepieces are the metal screws/slugs underneath each string on the pickup. On one of the coils the polepieces are probably screws. You can raise or lower them with any screw driver that fits, and it'll give you more individual control on that one string.

I think the JB/A2P (yes, that is the Alnico 2 Pro)/FS set up sounds killer, but the A2P is significantly lower output than the FS and JB, so keep that in mind.

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

Ok well I have adjusted the polepiece with no luck.

Any other suggestions for a good middle pup with a JB and FS??

And I have a few other questions 4 messages up.

Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

Man, I'm sorry it took me so long to respond to this thread. I haven't been on in a couple of weeks or so and I just got your PM's today.

Anyways, I'm really not sure what to say here. I've never had any "bass heavy" problems out of any of my guitars with my AX2/212's, no matter if the guitars had the stock pickups or Seymour Duncans in them. I still on occassion play some of my Epiphone Les Pauls with stock pickups through my amps and they never have a bass heavy problem.

I'm wondering what your settings may be, especially if you're using the 5 band EQ with presence. What amp models are you using? Are you using the crappy presets? If you're using the JCM 800 Model presets.......they suck!! The reason they are so bad is because they have no cabinet simulation turned on and that makes them super duper bass heavy sounding. If you could give me some idea of what amp models, cabinet models, eq, etc... you're using with the AX2/212 then I may be able to help you out. I just have a strange feeling it's something you're doing with the amp that's making it so bass heavy. Also, as Tone4Days mentioned, you have to take into consideration the dynamics of the room you're playing in, sonic contributions of other band members, and the like.

I'm not telling you to not buy any pickups, but I'd really do alot of messin around with my amp first. You will be able to tell a dramatic difference with new pickups, but I'd really like to know alot more about what you're doing with your amp first.

I have a link in my signature just below here that'll take you to a couple of soundclips I've done. Let me know if they're anything like the tone you're going for and that'll help me out to help you out.

Re: Stock pickup problem? Need some advice

Hi JOLLY

I like most of the 10 through 12 channel settings with the Mesa Boogie and Soldano. Ive used the channel 9 setting with a different band where were looking for the deep heavy tones. I like channel 27 B and the 26 channels too, I tried using 9C for a clean channel also.

I have messed around with all my settings to much to even no how many hours I have into trying to get tones I like. Including the EQ. Usually I turn the noise gate off also.

I really like your songs and the tones you are getting. I listened to the first to songs you had up on your song page. I know you can upload tones that I could download and save but I dont no how to do this. And the only other way to try out would be to write down the settings so I can see if these settings clear up my bass heavy tone. I would be way happy to get 1 bank of tones going that I like with a clean channel. I will buy the proper cable if I need to DL into my cpu and tranfer to my amp if thats possible.

And like I said earlier in this message I have a 100w Peavey head that I,m really bass heavy with it to. When I try to get the bass down my tone gets thin and hollow sounding. I get the same results when I try to tweek my AX2 212.

To my ear the low E is my only problem, the rest of the strings seem to play fine. We do not have a music store in town anymore and I will be trying some 9 gage strings soon and a different brand. Currently Im using 10's.

Let me know if you need anymore information from me and thank you so much for taking the time to help out.
