What are widely considered the holy grails for each class of stompbox/effect? What is considered the very top of the line, best of breed, legendary, greatest (or among the greatest) for each type of effect:

I think its going to be far to subjective to really get anything that remotely resembles a consensus with a question like that. Especially with the OD/Distortions that a total matter of taste based up what type of music you play, not to mention the type of amp your running it into, type of guitar etc.

Wah's as well are a pretty personal thing with no real "right" answer.


Modulation effects may be a bit easier. I like the purple boss flanger for example and while not the most expensive, it gets the job done and I dont think theres much difference in the high end stuff. Doesn't mean they aren't better, but unless you really use that pedal alot, not many want to spend top dollar for a "gravy" effect verses "bread and butter" stuff like an OD.

marshall tube amp distortion and fender supersonic amp overdrive are probably the best amp overdrives i can think of.

as far as pedals are concerned, the vox wah is great and the jeckle and hyde pedal is awesome. for metal, the metal muff is probably the best i've heard.

• Phaser EH Small Stone for me
• Compressor No clue
• Delay Echolplex! Besides that I'm still digging the DMM
• Chorus Small Clone or CE-2
• Reverb Fender Standalone/Weber Revibe
• Tremolo probably Weber Revibe
• Fuzz not a fuzz faz so hard to know
• Distortion Thus Far a Distortion III or Rat
• Flanger Haven't played enough to really compare
• Etc.

I could never imagine having all those effects in my signal chain.

I use Chorus (a boss CH1 or CE2), Delay (Boss DD3) a TS9 for overdrive and a Monroe Drive mad by Xssive (Its a 808 heavily modded) and a Wah. and tuner. All the pedals I own work for me, so I see no reason to explore replacing them. I am currently shopping for an A/B/Y though.

Chorus- OLD TC Electronics (I think it was a Chorus/Phaser thing)

Analog Delay- Washburn Analog Delay.

Tuner- Everything I've heard about the Peterson tuners has been overwhelmingly positive.

As far as what I'm actually using...

AHAAA !!!! Dude, you missed the thread where I was trying to find out how people in the know can compare BSM boosters to Analog's man baueno boost. So why did you pick BSM, so what are the maind differernces between RM and HS-C? And one more, Mutron III Envelope Filter - noise gate? Thanks.

Yeah, sorry Dr, I must have missed that thread. The BSM treble boosters are pretty hard to beat, in fact I can't think of anything. Mike's Beano Boost is his take on the Dallas Rangemaster, but it doesn't have the same mojo as Bernd's RM (which stands for, you guessed it, Rangemaster!) The BSM HS-C is his clone of the Hornby Skewes treble booster, as used by Ritchie Blackmore. He makes about 4 variations of these, reflecting the mods that Ritchie had done to his Hornby Skewes over the years, including a later silicon version. The rest are of course germanium transistors like the original. Ritchie's classic early Deep Purple tones are mainly Hornby Skewes into a Vox AC-30.

The Mutron III is an envelope filter, I guess the closest description you could get would be "touch wah." It is a wah-like filter which opens up dependent on picking dynamics. Imagine squeezing a duck just as it's about to vomit. Made famous by Stevie Wonder on his Clavinet, and Bootsy Collins on bass. Ridiculously funky and untouched by anything else. They made a reissue, but it's caca. Here's a pic of my old early 70's Mutron III. It just looks like a nauseous duck to me.

Nice to hear that you are a RB fan too. Which BSM got the most gain or should I say pushes the tubes to saturate the most? One of the HS's or RM? also can we please hear a clip of mutron in action the concept sounds fantastic. Noisegates yeah .... I cant decide weather I need one .... I play high gain but then they do chocke the tone, played an ISP yesterday .... was not impressed. Thanks

I love envelope filters. The very best one IMO is the Lovetone Meatball. That thing is really amazing.

Years ago, I wanted an old Mutron III, and got the reissue. I had to give the Meatball back to a friend, so I wanted the new Mutron reissue as a replacement. I thought it sucked, and as soon as I tried an Electroharmonix Q Tron, I realized it was even better sounding than the Mutron, so I ended up with the Q Tron. That is one fun pedal, and it's even got gain added to it, so it dishes out some tones that sound like stomping on a duck.
