Now seriously : for me anywhere. This includes sitting on the floor, on a bed, a chair (bit no armchair !) or standing helding the guitar on a knee and the foot on whatever...

Remember it is good to also practise standing. If you play in in a band you stand (with some exceptions like Robert Fripp for example).

Stool choice is more important to pianists actually (think of Glenn Gould).

I don't know the quality of that one I posted. I was just illustrating the basic design.

The one I have is built very well. I can't imagine it breaking unless pitched off a skyscraper or smashed at with a sledgehammer.

With better build comes more weight, of course. But even so, I wouldn't call a nice one "heavy" by any means.

They're very common yard sale or swap meet chairs. Probably the older they are, the better built they are, in general...and old ones will be cheap. To get a brand new one of comparable quality, it will probably be many dollars in comparison (and you can't even get a proper feel for the quality until it arrives in the mail).

I always referred to them as "Samsonite folding metal chairs," but I'm not sure if Samsonite is actually the originator of that design.

I practice standing, too...but when I sit, I use a strap as well, and the guitar doesn't rest on my leg- this is so my back can remain straight. When I stand up, the guitar is in the same place on my body, and the angles of the wrists and arms are all the same...I don't want to learn 2 ways to hold my body.
Solo instrumental shows (and duo shows) are sitting, band shows are standing.

I am guessing that 2nd stool, while it looks comfortable, might make pedal use a little hard.

Tried several chairs and stools. I liked the office chair because of the comfort and adjustability, but wasn't crazy about the wheels. Local pawn shop had some drum kits with different thrones, so I tried those out.
Ended up buying a PDP by DW drum throne with the tractor style seat. Had it for a little over a week now and I really like it.

I have 2 office chairs that I was given that don't have arms on them. They work well enough for me.

I like to play standing, but my knees already pop and grind, and I'm only a few years away from the age that my mom had to have double knee replacement surgery. So it gets uncomfortable pretty fast and I'm trying to ease the wear/pain when I can. I do enough other stuff that causes pain without playing guitar doing it too, haha

I have a couple of of cheap ($20) armless desk chairs from Walmart. They look like this:

Invariably, the cat chooses to sleep on the one in front of my studio desk. When I go to practice or use the studio computer, I roll "his" chair away (with him on it) and roll "mine" into position. Of course as soon as I leave, he switches chairs so I have to move him again when I return.

I got an "ergonomic" PC-chair for free :o (too bad I can't share a picture)

But it's got wheels (for moving between PC/ recording interface and amp),
and no armrests :D

So I'm happy :D

I prefer non padded folding chair for brighter tone with my Gibson, and a padded folding chair when I play my brighter super strat. It kind of takes a little off the high end.

When I'm recording, I tend to use just the gaming chair with fold up arms. Gives my recordings a warmer feel, and you don't get the shrillnes from one of the wooden dining chairs.

Drum throne for Acoustic. Gives my Fender a nice push to the mids.
