Strange Idea...??

I was just thinking randomly looking at my guitar... is it possible to install 4 single coil pickups on a regular guitar with individual toggle switches to activate the pups and a master tone? If so, has this ever been done?

PRS has done with 5 single coils

4 single coils could be cool depending on the wiring used...
Just like Pete showed guitars from the 60s often had 4 or more pickups with individual switches.

Re: Strange Idea...??

It is possible and feasible, but you would need a custom pickguard. I have seen a guy on ebay who makes a 5 pickup strat pickguard. I remember seeing a Buddy Holly tribute concert in the 80's and the guitarist had what looked like two tele neck pickups between the two strat pickups and a 5 way switch.

Re: Strange Idea...??

Mine has 3 with individual on/off switches, series/parallel switch and out of phase switch! It works pretty well! :)

Re: Strange Idea...??

I'm working on a guitar that will have 5 Bill Lawrence singles. 2 in the bridge and neck, 1 in the middle. The 4 in the bridge and neck positions will run to on/on/on mini toggles then over to the 5 way. The vol will be a push/push pot that will allow me to turn the neck position pickups on at any time. I'm just waiting on my custom pickguard to come back. It's going in the incomplete sunburst guitar to the right w/ the universal route.

Re: Strange Idea...??

Cool stuff 9finger, are the paired singles in the bridge and the pair in the neck each going to be RW/RP so they can be on at the same time and essentially be a bucker? that'd be sweet!! I imagine you have something like that in mind, with the on/on/on being s/c, s/c, both in series, correct??

Re: Strange Idea...??

It's a non issue w/ the Bill Lawrence pickups. They essentially stacked humbuckers so there isn't a need for RW/RP pickups. That was biggest factor in deciding to use them. I'm hoping that it works it out somewhat like a humbucker when both are activated.

Re: Strange Idea...??

Check out the Steve Morse EBMM guitar. It's got neck and bridge buckers, with two singles stuck between them, one of which is slanted. It's also got the craziest switching setup ever.

That's what gave me my initial idea. I just stream lined it a bit to make it more user friendly for me.
