Strange readings on 59 & PG

I have several old SD pickups I bought back in the late 80's.

A PG(b) that reads 7.8K

A 59(b) that reads 8.5K

This (to me) seems backwards according to the charts. Is there anything special with the windings on these if I were to simply swap the magnets?

What I'd really need to do is to measure the resonant frequency. Anyone hear know how to do that?

The magnet won't have any affect on the DC resistance. You could remove it altogether and the ohms will stay the same. I'm not sure why you'ld get those readings, unless its just a normal production variation.

Those readings can vary probably 10% up or down....Just be glad you actually got readings and not "open"... :smack: :)

I get different readings, with and without the magnet.

Faraday,
Small changes in temp will change your readings. Do you think this might have caused the change?

ArtieToo,
I was really wondering how SD controls resonance frequency. Usually the core inside the coil is what determines this. By changing the metal slugs and adjustable pole pieces or blades are made out of, you can change the response of the pickup just like swapping magnets. Take a look at the screamin demon for an example.

I'm thinking if I swap magnets, I still might not have a real PG or a real 59 because something else might be missing. Maybe I need to change the slugs and pole pieces as well?

Try this. First, with the magnet in, measure the resistance in you living room, then in your bedroom, then outside. See if all the measurements are slightly different.

Try it again with the magnets out. All those readings should be close to the same. What might be happening, (this experiment may fail), is that with the magnet in, the tiniest amount of movement, or electrical noise, in the area, will generate a minute voltage in the coil. An ohmeter works by injecting a voltage into the coil, and measuring it at the other end. Any voltage in the coil, will throw off the reading.

Thats a good question. I'm not so sure they "control" it per se, or simply measure it after they've made a batch. If they make them all fairly consistently, the resonance should vary by much.
