Strat Antiquities

Hello,

I own a 62 strat RI that has Antiquity surfers in neck an middle and SSL-3 hot, tapped in bridge...

I am thinking about putting the surfer custom bridge in to fix polarity issues between the pickups

or putting a set of texas hots and custom bridge in.. Advice?

I wa looking at the Suhr backplate system for this guitar and acme guitars reommended it with Fralin blues specials in neck and middle and SP43 for the bridge due to the harder rock stuff I do...Not sure if the backplate is worth the money they charge for it?

Will the surfer custom bridge with adding a baseplate come close to the SSL-3 in the gain handling department?

I was considering the texas hots since may have a little more mids for higher gain applications?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: Strat Antiquities

You should be able to make the surfers and ssl play nice together .What exactly is the problem? Remember ,the surfers are wound the opposite of most duncans so you may only need to swap a few wires or pickups around.

Re: Strat Antiquities

Not sure about your other questions but--
I have the Suhr Backplate on my guitar, and I highly recommend it. It does not kill 100% of the hum, but with adequate shielding, you can get into the 80% range. It does not kill noise that you get from the controls, but it definitely gets rid of the low frequency hum. I am very satisfied with the noise reduction, and I think it is very worth it.

Why don''t you just swap around the neck and middle surfers? That'd solve the polarity issue. ;)

If they are using the Suhr backplate and the middle is RW/RP, then you cannot use it in any position, you would need to use 2 neck model pickups and a bridge (unless a non RW/RP model exists).

Thanks for the feedback so far. I forgot to post how I had things wired. The middle rw/rp pickup is in the neck and neck pickup is in the middle. The wires for the pickups are reversed to have everything correct as far as hum cancelling. However the only thing is the pole peices become like the end of an unplugged guitar cable if you touch them at all.

I was thinking by installing the full set of surfers it might solve this and also keep the hot and ground wires going the conventional way.

I was wondering how the surger custom bridge sounds under high gain? I can always boost the bridge pickups with a tubescreamer etc for more gain if necessary? My amp is a Bogner XTC classic...
Our band is a modern bluesy rock trio..We cover a lot of different cover and original material.
Gary Moore, Yngwie, Lynch, Trower, Travers, SRV, Hendrix, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, Cantrell, ALice in Chains, Bush, STP, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Zeppelin, etc...

Question:
Doesn't reversing the wires send the signal the the opposite way the coil is wrapped causing inductance and heat?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: Strat Antiquities

if i were you i would throw the surfer in the bridge. if you're gonna get one texas hot, you may as well get all texas hots so that they compliment eachother better. what are you using the tap for on the bridge?

Re: Strat Antiquities

If positions 2 & 4 are humcancelling and arent out of phase than you have the wiring correct but I would check all your grounds.I think theres something just not right there. Be sure the bridge is still grounded too.

Re: Strat Antiquities

Hello,

I bought the tapped SSL-3 Hot for the tapped in position #4...The guy who wired this.. said since the ground and hot wire are reversed, even though is in phase, hum cancelling etc, would not change the fact that some are south polarity and north polarity on the pole pieces? He said this is what causes the pole pieces when touched to sound like touching end of guitar cable not plugged into guitar and that some sound guys may have issues with this....
