It won't sound any different due to being covered with a fresh coat or two of paint...and it will look a hell of a lot better. If anything will change its tone, it will be the act of taking it apart and putting it back together and putting on a different set of strings, not the addition of paint on top of it. That tonal change is well within the range of normal inconsistency from pack to pack of strings. So don't worry about these entirely imagined tonal disasters that everyone has laid out for you. Just go for it.

I'm kind of thinking this as well. Worst case, I totally screw up an already ugly-ass broken finish.

There are two colours I can't abide on a guitar: yellow, and purple.
I'm 95% certain it will be surf green.

if you want surf green then try buffing the clear off
this should take the yellowed clear off and be back to white
if so then clear it and be done
if not
a thin stain of light blue to make it green
then clear it and be done
if not
sand to wood spay what you like
then clear it and be done
if not
sell it to me
