Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

Bare Knuckle Apache. The A3 magnet softens it up a bit and it’s wound a hair hotter than the other two. I have no tone control on it and I set it lower than the other two and the same height on both sides. It’s perfect.

Twangbanger may work. In kind of whn through the same thing and wound up with a Antiquities Texas Hot in my last strat. If I build another Strat that will be what I use. Just remember it's north leading sow is RW/RP from other normal Duncan singles. If you have a RW RP in the middle for hum canceling you will need to swap it and the neck pickup around with the Texas Hot in the bridge.
Think you will find this demo of an entire set interesting.

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

I have a Strat bridge sound in my head that is a vintage-ish classic Strat bridge pickup sound. From Ritchie Blackmore and Hendrix to Mark Knopfler. They all used stock pickups.

I also play Strat's since the early 80's and IMHO/IME, obtaining a good tone from a Strat bridge pickup is totally possible with stock PU's but...
-it requires a specific signal chain with some band aid: various treble boosters for Blackmore (I use a Rangemaster clone for such sounds), Orange compressor for Knopfler, DS1 for Gary Moore, a whole Cornish pedalboard with custom designed filters for Gilmour ... I love an EHX "Linear Power Booster" with a Strat: it's not "linear" at all and gives a fat tone;
-paradoxically, a good tone with stock bridge Strat PU's is easied by serious technical flaws in the components involved: massive stray capacitance due to curly cables, resistive load of non true bypass wah's...

For years, I use a "cable capacitance emulator" with my Strats: this passive switchable box mimics the capacitive load of very long cables, in the Hendrix / SRV fashion. It gives me the warm tone with enhanced mids due to parasitic cap. If I didn't use it, my Marshall would split my ears once cranked up with my Strats... When I use it, the tone is perfect for me.

So, since I tweak my Strat tones thx to external parms and LRC filters, I've stopped to swap pickups and came back to regular specs SC's, with the same PU in each position if needed. I've even a CS69 in bridge position in a Strat, BTW: it's supposed to sound "weak" but once paired with the basic (and cheap) RC filtering that I use, it sounds as fat as Uli Jon made it sound in his 1973 white Strat (with stock PU's). YMMV.

Now : since resonant peaks are defined by stray capacitance AND inductance, Strat pickups able to mimic the effect of high stray capacitance (without a long cable nor added caps) AND with more beef would/should logically be those with a high inductance, IOW all those overwound... DiMarzio FS1 comes to my mind (as used by Knopfler in various positions in his red Strat).

BTW, the main effect of a metal plate added under a Strat PU is to boost the inductance.

Out of Duncan pickups that I still love as they are (SSL1's being my oldest beloved Duncan SC's) and beside other models already mentioned, I have also a good experience with...
Onamac single coils,
Van Zandt PU's,
Kinman stacks.
Last but not least, I find interesting something like the "Tall Texan set" wound by Dave Stephens around a taller bobbin than typical Strat PU's...

Good luck in your quest, rze99!

I'd recommend the Twangbanger. More mids but retains high end and works well with the middle pickup.

I just installed Rose Robusta neck/middle with Rose Buff Beauty on my Strat. I like them very much. The Buff Beauty is really a nice Strat bridge pickup: just a bit more meat and roudness than traditionnal bridge pickup.

Blender pot. I have an SSL5 bridge, SSL1 mid and a Fat 50s neck in my
#1 Strat. 1 tone, 1 volume, blender. The tonal variations are limitless.
Do a little research. Their incredible in an SSS configuration.

I use the fender custom shop 54 bridge pickup which is 6.5k and higher inductance without to me sounding overwound
I have never tried the antiquity surfer but I like the fender pickup I have and for stuff I use my strat for I hate nasally overwound pickups and this one is the hottest one I've played that doesn't dork up the #2 position for me. And it's still not very hot

I think something like that or go Duncan antiquity for character like the ssl-1 but not as harsh
I always thought the SSL1 was a little overwound and harsh personally.

If you like the Twangbanger, but want it just a tad "meatier" you could also try adding a steel baseplate to it.

Just curious, but I have the Twangbanger with the copper baseplate. What does switching to steel do? Thanks.

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

its a copper plated steel baseplate

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

Ah. So the Twangbanger is already there. Thanks Jeremy. :)

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

Based on the OP's comments, I'd probably add my vote to the others for the Antiquity Surfer bridge.

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

That's a good question. I think, SSL-1 with just a touch more meat. I think I will connect it to the tone control to manage the brittle element.

This is the pickup I've often said is missing from the lineup and SD should make. I found that in Van Zandt Blues (middle version).

That's literally the SSL-5: LINK

It's not. It's really hot and middy in comparison to SSL-1 which has plenty of treble and really prominent bass without much mids.

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

I must admit, my first thought was the Twangbanger before I got to the end of your post. Also the Antiquity Surfer or Texas Hot bridge pickups may be worth looking at.

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

And a sh*tload of gain with the hi watt amp and the big muff

Callaham H/SRVs

Not to mention the Alembic bass preamp between effects and amps, etc...

...in a signal chain made more and more complex along the years (signal chain in constant evolution, like his guitars: he has constantly modified the black Strat, AFAIK).

But what I hear in the following vid around 4:30 still seems to be the stock bridge pickup of a vintage Strat, made useable by loads of effects (and the great playing of course, but it's not my point here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLYeVk9Sk60

IMHO, FWIW and so on. :-)

Re: Strat bridge pickup: for those that have tried many, which one did yousettle on?

I eventually used a Classic Stack Plus with a Pickup Booster pedal.
