Re: strat colors, halp!

I'll go with red/rosewood. It's what I had on mine, but with chrome red.

my last one MIM was chrome red w/ maple, so I know all about how sweet chrome red is. Candy Apple is just not as nice IMO.

Re: strat colors, halp!

IMO, the most gorgeous Strat is the Sienna Sunburst with maple board (of course I've got one). I usually end up changing the pickguard on most of my guitars anyway, and if you are already considering getting new pups, then a new guard isn't much of an additional expense. I find them for around $15 or so.

But, follow the suggestions to find ones that sound and play great, then pick any one of them and take her home. You will probably grow to like any color, but if the tone isn't there you'll never like her no matter what color she is.

If your GC doesn't have the color you want, they can usually check other stores and have it shipped to your store. then try it out and make sure it sounds and plays great before laying down the $$$. That way you get a great player AND the color you want.

Re: strat colors, halp!

played some strats today.
I think I must have played about 10 strats today. All of em MIM stds except the one classic 50's.

The 50's had a nice neck but the higher frets buzzed a lil. The neck felt a lil small when fretting up there, too. I like it for open position chords and it's way nice for barre chords.

I narrowed it down to 2 sunbursts, a '10 w/ rosewood one and an '09 w/ maple one, a LPB HSS w/ maple one, a black w/ maple one, and a midnight wine w/maple.

The sunburst/maple one looked like it had the action raised a good bit so I decided against that one. The LPB one had nut binding issues and I decided against an HSS setup in general.
The sunburst/rosewood, the black one, and the mid. wine one were the top 3. The black one had a scratch on the back so forget that one. Then, it came down to looks and rosewood vs maple.

So I put the midnight wine one on layaway and I'm paying it off on saturday after my paycheck clears.

Mine is much more on the dark purple side of what fender calls "midnight wine." Some just look red in online pics, and mine is certainly not like those. I tried to take a pic on my phone but is just came out looking black. They should call it "midnight plum" or something.

And that's a good reason to stop looking at new MIM Fenders, and focus on American ones on Craigslist, where they're sacrificing them at MIM prices.

It's foolish to buy a new MIM, just like it's foolish to buy a new Hyundai instead of a 2 year old Lexus.

I see what you mean, and I can keep that in mind for the future. I'll try and do something like that when I'm in the market for an SG (maybe next year? who knows). I'd much rather have an SG std than a g-400
