Strat neck on a Tele?

Anyone here ever try this?

I just bought a USA Standard Strat neck to go on my Malmsteen body. Sadly, since the neck is USA Standard, it won't allow the stings to sit on the fretboard correctly (the body is a 6 screw trem unit). So without a refret, it won't work.

Since I'm not gonna refret the neck, I was thinking about using it on my Highway One Tele body. I don't think that the vintage spacing will have the same problem, but I might be wrong. Does anyone here have any experience with this setup?

Thanks

Mark

Re: Strat neck on a Tele?

Tele necks are squarish at the butt end and Strat necks are more rounded. They are not really interchangeable. Lew

I don't think you'll have too many problems. You may have to do some neck pocket work, but Steve Morse's main guitar for years was a Frankenstein conglomeration of a Tele body, Strat neck, TOM bridge, and about 5 pickups. And Paul Dean in the early years of Loverboy was playing a Strat body with a Tele neck. Obviously it can be done.

i always heard tele necks were easier playing thats y they were so popular?

I prefer a strat neck most of the time, but I suppose on average they're fairly similar.

I have always heard the neck will not intonate because of the difference between the rounded vs. squared off heel. Try it and let us know how it truns out.

I had a strat neck on a tele for a while. The intonation was fine but I didn't like the way the square/round heel and neck came together.
I recently replaced it with a tele neck and it's more solid with better sustain.

a Strat neck will go on a tele but a tele will NOT go on a Strat

That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to know if anyone was sure about that.

Does anyone know if the string spacing is different between the vintage tele bridge and the American Standard (in other words, am I probably going to have the same string spacing problem as the Highway Tele has the vintage bridge)?

Well, partly. This tells me that the neck heel MAY fit, but doesn't talk about the lay of the strings.

I'll just put the various parts (even though this way I'll have to buy the vintage Tele and Strat bridges) together and let you guys know. Course, if none of the combos work, I can see some Fender parts on the auction block...lol.

i've seen it done, and it worked fine

but i don't see the damn point, IMO the neck is one of the best parts of a tele, but if its your thing, go for it

The 'damn point' is that I have an extra tele body and a strat neck. This coming from the guy with the Gigawatt Bassman, heh. :laugh2: No flame intendend.

Re: Strat neck on a Tele?

put the neck on the body, bolt it up, and try with the string. There's gonna be a gap, and if you dont want the gap there, fill the gap with some model clay, and make a mold. Send it to me and I'll make you a little gap filler out of some alder or maple (your choice) for free.
