Strat pickup combination question (SSL5/CS69/Fat50)

Hi everyone,

I just got my first strat (long time Les Pauls/ humbucker user), and want to install the (in)famous David Gilmour's SSL5/CS69/Fat50 combination.

As a new strat user, I am not too familiar with the polarity/winding direction thing.

After searching a bit, I understand that I need:

bridge: SSL-5 regular
middle: CS69 regular
neck: Fat50's RWRP

all wired normally (white signal, black ground).

Did I get this right?

Thanks in advance!
Fabiano

yes you did.

Although, there a plenty of folks (including me) who prefer it when positions 2 and 4 don't hum cancel, so its not a big deal for future reference.

If you want hum cancelling in positions 2 & 4. CS69 needs to be in neck position as it has south polarity pole pieces.
Also SSL5 should be wired with white as ground as they are opposite of the chosen Fender pickups.

You will need to wire the SSL-5 in reverse polarity (swap the leads) to make it operate in-phase with Fender pickups. That's always a trick for first timers here!

For the magnet polarity:
SSL-5 = South
CS69 = South
Fat50's RWRP = ??? (I'm not sure, but I guess it may be also South)

Magnet polarity is only a concern for hum-cancelling in the notch positions. All the Fender pickups will be in the correct phase with each other no matter which magnet polarity they have.
Check the magnetic polarity by positioning two strat pickups with the poles facing each other. If you feel the magnetic forces repel, then you know they are same magnetic polarity.

Sounds like a great setup, Fat 50s is by far my favorite neck single coil pickup.

Enjoy!

The SSL-5 is great! I have it in a strat bridge with David Allen Voodoo 69 in neck and middle. I love them for the Gilmour to Hendrix sound. I got the idea from Bjorn Riis on Gilmourish.com The voodoo 69s are awesome! I also place the mini toggle switch. That is a great addition to play the neck and bridge PU at the same time. Being a LP guy, you might like as well.

Enjoy your new sounds!

Re: Strat pickup combination question (SSL5/CS69/Fat50)

Well, I think I might have been mistaken... after the comments above.... and further reading...

The pickups config are:

CS 69 : south, clockwise.
CS Fat50: south, clockwise.
SSL5: south, counter-clockwise. (switching leads makes it south, clockwise, same as CS fenders).

means that I have two options, as I understand:

1. NO Hum cancelling.
SSL5 (switch leads), CS69, CS Fat50 regular

2. Hum cancelling 2 & 4. (as there is no CS69 RWRP available, it must go to the neck position)
SSL5 (switch leads), CS Fat50 RWRP, CS69

Right?

Unfortunately its not possible to make any hum-cancelling combination with pickups having the same magnetic polarity.
The Fat 50s middle pickup is hum cancelling when used as part of the Fender fat 50s Set, because the neck and bridge would be made with opposite magmetic polarity (north in this case). Anyway don't assume the pickups have a particular magnetic polarity just because the internet says so. Its better to test them because there can be surprising inconsistancies.

You can get a RWRP SSL-5. That and the appropriate Fat 50 (to be honest I’m confused which now) would be hum cancelling.

I thought I could get the Fat50 RWRP as a single. But you might be right, yes.

SSL5 regular (switching leads), CS69 regular, CS Fat50 regular (no Hum cancelling) is probably where I´ll land then. (I´ll try getting one at a time to be able to check)

If you haven't ordered the pickups yet it may be better to get the neck version Fat 50s. It is probably wound differently from the middle version, and I think would give you a better chance of a hum cancelling combination. The ssl5 is available in both magnetic polarities, so that is easy.
