Strat pickup in a tele

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

If you have the mechanical skills, sure. A Tele neck pup is smaller than a Strat pup, so you'll need to remove some wood and plastic for the change; this will give you a warmer, fuller sound in the neck position. A Tele bridge pup, however, is larger than a Strat pup, so you can just angle the mounting screws -- but keep in mind that you'll be losing the beef that makes a Tele pup special. In effect, you'll have a hard-tail Strat.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

It's like that in Nashville Tele's .... I being a proud owner of one. I've got strat pups in the middle and neck positions and a twanging tele pup in the bridge. It's got great character and it's a kinda "best of both worlds" scenario.... If your tele isn't routed for it, you'll of course have to do some sort of routing to the body and if you don't intend on buying a new pickguard, you'll for sure have to do some modifications to it as well.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

tele bridge pups mount with three screws rather than the two of a strat pup so while you could do it, you would have to find a way to mount it either by making a bottom plate or mounting the pup to the body rather than the bridge.

for a neck pup, like jafo said, the tele pup is smaller. on some teles the rout is big enough for a strat pup so the body wouldnt need to be modified, but others youd need to widen the rout. the pickguard would need to be modified.

i find tele neck pups to be fairly warm, dark, and muted. a ssl2 for example would be brighter, clearer, deeper, and richer sounding than typical tele neck pup.

Yank that cover and enter a clear sparkling new world...

As for mounting a Strat pu in a Tele bridge position, I suppose you could crazy glue a Tele baseplate to the bottom of a Strat pu. But usually people are trying to find a way to put a Tele bridge in a Strat for the extra punch. Never heard of someone wanting a Strat bridge pu in a Tele.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

Can a strat pickup be installed in a telecaster in either the bridge or neck position?

I bought a Tele brand new that way. It had a Strat Tex/Mex in the neck & a Tele Tex/mex in the bridge. I believe its called a California Tele.

If you are planning on doing this in the neck you would just need to hang the pickup of the pickguard like a Strat. Putting a Strat pickup in the Bridge.......I don't know if I would want to do that!

I need to stop browsing the custom shop...

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

Putting a Strat neck pickup in a Tele is commonly done. You could probably file the hole in the pickguard bigger, but I just bought a new pickguard when I did it.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

What about going the other way, tele neck pickups in a strat? I know the angles (and other differences) in the bridge pickups make that swap more of a change, but what about the necks?

Why would you do that? The only advantage of that wimpy Tele neck pickup is that it doesn't get boomy with a hardtail. In a trem Strat this probably sounds like using a SM57.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

ive tried tele neck pups in strats and they sound like a tele neck pup.

evan has a guitar with that tele neck pup with exposed poles in it and it is great!!

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

I like Tele neck pu's, especially with no cover. The narrowness is something of an advantage because you can wind them with 43 gauge to a pretty hot spec without them getting muddy, because they don't see as much bass.

I actually wanted a StraBro-90 Strat pickup for my tele bridge mainly since they only offered the StraBro-90 for Strat. I also considered mounting that strat pickup on a tele bridge pup baseplate. I sort of nixed that idea though.

Maybe next time they'll offer a TeleBro-90? hmmm...

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

Anyone try an uncovered tele Quarter Pound neck without the cover? I prefer my neck tele pickups without covers like Zhang. Just wondering if anyone has a QP like this?

I didn't have a Tele QP.

But the Strat QP fell out of favor with me because although I seem to like the bigger magnets just fine, the thinner wire with hot wind is just over the top. There had been pickups with the large magnets and regular wind (Schecter F400 or somesuch). I think that would work better.

Re: Strat pickup in a tele

Most of what you need to know has been covered. I'll just add that my uncovered (not that it matters) APS in the neck of my tele completely rocks. I can not imagine any reason to keep a tele neck over the strat neck swap.

I put a strat STK-S2 into a tele using this method, but NOTE, you will have
to remove the pickup's original screw mounting tabs off the pickup and cover
as they don't fit into the body cavity.

++++1 on removing the neck cover, you really can hear the difference.

Same here! Just buy a new pickguard (they're fairly inexpensive).
