Strat Pups?

Im hopefully going to be getting a Fender American Stratocaster around Christmas time. Im trying to figure out a good set for vintage bluesy rock tones (ex: Hendrix, SRV). Im thinking about doing a setup with a variation of The Texas Hots, APS-1s, and Surfers(maybe). What would be a good setup using those? Maybe Antiquity Custom Bridge, Aps-1 rw/rp middle. and maybe a surfer or another texas hot in the neck? Or i could just go for a set of all texas hots if that setup isnt good? But i dont want the tone to get too shrill or bright, i want it to have some quack and mids but still be smooth.
Suggestions?

Thanks-
Alex

Re: Strat Pups?

I suggest if you're getting an american strat that you listen to the guitar with its stock pickups first. It doesn't make sense to get a brand new guitar that's deficient, IMO. A strat is a very generic thing; have you compared a buch af variations to see if there's one you like best?

Re: Strat Pups?

Yes i have played many variations, i can honestly say that i like the playablitly of he neck and tone of the wood of the American Series Fender the best, the only thing I would change is the tone of the pickups, they are kinda weak and neutral. With that said, that is why i am thinking about a change in pups and which setup would work best for the tone im lookng for.

Re: Strat Pups?

The Texas hot set is hard to beat for classic strat sounds. The APS set is great as well, if you don't want to pony up for the Antiquities.

Re: Strat Pups?

Are you saying that the Aps is roughly almost like the Texas Hots tonewise, just not with that extra.. sumthing?

Re: Strat Pups?

i wouldnt really say that the Texas Hot is better sounding than the APS pickup......they are just different..... but the price for the texas hot is fine because it sounds sweet

Re: Strat Pups?

Im trying to understand the tone of the Texas Hot. Is there any player that their tone sounds like a texas hot, my impression is that the Texas Hot is along the lines of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix am i wrong? Plus What magnet is in the Texas hots? alnico 2?

Re: Strat Pups?

Have u ever heard of a Texas Hot Custom bridge/ Tex Hot RW/RP/ Surfer set? Im thinking of putting a surfer in the neck instead of another texas hot to add a bit of chime in the cleans, but i dont want the glassy sound to dominate, will that set work together real well, or would i be better off going for a full set of texas hots?

Never played the Surfers, Alex! Lotta fans of both sets of Antiquities. Thru my own personal experience, the Ant. Texas Hots w/Custom bridge is the best set of pups I've ever heard. True there are alot of pups I haven't heard, only because there are so many, but I've heard or played enough to know the ANT TH/Cust. set rocks my world. I'll be getting some Surfers soon, 'cause I gotta know. Just read that thread thoroughly, there's alot of great insight there. Good luck.

Re: Strat Pups?

i did have a Surfer in the neck position, with middle APS and twangbanger bridge.......and somethin just seemed wrong about the surfer..... i think i like some mids to my sound in general.....but the the twangbanger and APS having a2 magnets, and the surfer with A5......the surfer just seemed flat and empty to me....... it may just be my guitar or something, but i was not very impressed with the surfer.....didnt have much bottom end either

the texas hot remedied that, it has that nice bottom end to it, and it sounds more like hendrix to me than the surfer did......those are just my findings

Re: Strat Pups?

Ok, sounds like ill go with a Texas Hot set once i get the guitar for Christmas, and i just read that combining antiquity 1 and 2 will make the pups out of phase, you can fix that of course, Lew said how, but i think ill stick with a set of Tex Hots, thanks alot everyone!
