John modded two of my old MIJ TS-9's to TS-808 specs and for a less steeley/nasal tone and yesterday I had a chance to compare my modded pedals to my buddy AJ's excellant but stock MIJ TS-9.

We both preferred the modded pedals.

I was curious if my modded pedals had lost anything because I had asked John to make them less metallic and a little less compressed and to mod them for a more transparent and more natural tone.

That's just what he did.

The modded pedals will do anything the unmodded pedal will do: except sound nasal and steely and ugly!

Again, John's mods are highly recommended. I couldn't be happier with the results.

hmmm...sounds like just what the doctor ordered...?!

when i snag a tubescreamer...it's definitely going to john first thing!!!

Yep...just what I asked for. I ordered a TS-808 Reissue the other day and should have it to compare the modded TS-9's to in about a week. When I'm done, I'm guessing I'll send the TS-808 to John too! Lew

Thanks Lew....Most often the modded Tube Screamers do what the stock one does but you now can have more gain at high drive settings, more lows and more fullness of tone, and a bit cleaner tone as you roll the drive setting towards 0....I had a different mindset with Lew's pedals and I think Lew prefers the vibe of the RC4558P chip...The JRC4558D chip is a bit gainier in tone,a bit darker, and gives up some note clarity and the "openess" of tone Lew explains...The JRC does a darker singing tone better IMO than the TI chip does...Lew's TS9s were all about note clarity and not gain, especially when I noticed how low the drive settings were on Lew's pedals...Thanks Lew for sharing some very valued info from the "God's Ears"

Lew...The 808 you might like stock...You'll just notice the 808 lacking in the lows for the most part and a bit less gain at high drive settings...I only modded my reissue 808 because "I could"....The mods I did were just me tweaking my pedal to my liking though because the 808 sounds great right out of the box.....59Paul bought a reissue 808 and his findings were identical to mine as we both own strats and Les pauls....

Could you compare the price of the modded TS-9 with the stock reissue TS-808?

Re: Stratdeluxer Tubescreamer mods...part II

I just paid $150 for a new Reissue TS 808. You can get a used TS-9 for $50. John's charging about $25 to 35 per mod I believe. Lew

I Payed $169.99 for my 808....The average price for a TS on E Bay is around $70 less if you get lucky, but it's not the norm....Mods run $30 plus shipping...A modded TS9 I Like better than the stock reissue 808...
