I expect to get alot of differant answers to this question!

If you have an alder or swamp ash Strat with standard vintage style vibrato, could you weigh it for me?

I'd like the weight of the complete guitar with neck, tuners, bridge/vibrato, pickups...the whole deal.

I'd be curious to know what the average weight of an alder Strat and the average weight of a swamp ash Strat turns out to be.

I'd also like to know if you have a maple fingerboard or rosewood fingerboard.

Maybe you could just get on the bathroom scale and weigh yourself, then get on holding your Strat and then subtract your own weight and come up with the weight of your guitar?

Thanks! Lew

Hang on, I'll just have to pull the neck......be right back.....

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

Don't pull the neck! I'd like the weight of the complete guitar...hardware, tuners, vibrato...the whole deal. I'm guessing the average weight is going to be around 8 lbs.

Thanks! Lew

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

my alder strat/maple board is 7.6 lbs

funny thing is, my MIJ tele custom which is alder body/rosewood board.....is 4.2 lbs!

Well, OK there bossy! LOL, J/K! My strat is on the bench and it's still in pieces awaiting my antiquity's. That said, I just weighed all of the parts and come up with 7.4lbs

Flank, how did you get that?! I have only seen a few, and I mean very few Tele bodies that were close to that number you have for your whole guitar! Are you sure about that?

i meant to type 4.9 lbs, i typed 4.2 on accident.... but thats not that much of a difference.......yes, i indeed weighed it correctly, it is very very light

Wow...that's light. No vibrato block though so there's alot of weight right there in a Strat.

How did you weight that...Im not trying to be a jerk but your average Tele body weights about 5 pounds...

i did it how Lew said in the first post......i was at my buddies house and he has one of those digital scales to weigh yourself.....and we happened to be his kitchen jammin around on guitars, and then i weighed myself with the guitar and without the guitar for the fun of it....and yes, i did get back on the scale twice to double check cause i knew the guitar was light, but i thought 4.9 seemed really low!...it came out about the same both times..

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

I know this isn't what you asked for, but my mahogany/maple G&L Invader super strat weighs 9lbs.

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

my 2001 MIM Deluxe Super Strat (ash body/maple board) weighs 7.7 lbs.

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

my MIJ 62 RI (basswood body/ rosewood fingerboard) weighs 6.8 lbs and my ash 77 with a maple neck weighs 8 lbs.

To compare, my LP (97 Std) weighs 9.4 lbs and my Carvin DC 127t (all maple with an ebony board) weighs 11 lbs. :)

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

Lew,
I'll have to try to remember to do this at work Monday.

we have accurate scales there, and I can measure both a US alder strat and my custom ash strat. I always try to get the bodies around 4 lbs.

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

M.I.A. Strat With 68' headstock
Alder/Maple 8.4 pounds
Color Olympic White

A painted guitar would probably weigh a few oz's more than a sunburst I would think, and a large 68' headstock might weigh more than other necks, I could be wrong though.

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

I weighed seven of my Strats this morning. All have alder bodies.

1: 7 lbs
3: 7.5 lbs
2: 8 lbs
1: 8.5 lbs

My '63 weighed 7.5 lbs

My favorite MIJ weighed 8.5 lbs

Kind of surprised that one of my favorites weighed that much (8.5 lbs) because it's an extremely lively and resonant guitar!

My '76 ash strat weighs in at a full 10lbs! I checked it twice...

Re: Stratocaster type guitars: average weight?

Seems like about 7.5 lbs or a little more is the average weight for an alder body Strat. Thanks Guys!

I have a real heavy ash Strat too...it's up over 9 lbs and it's my least favorite Strat that I own. My buddy Mark Meyer's ash Strat is also heavy like that and doesn't sound so good either.

But my 8.5 lb alder Strat is one of my favorites.

Seems like alder can be a little heavier than average and still sound good whereas ash, if it's in that weight range, perhaps doesn't tend to sound so good.

Interesting.

Seems like if a guy was looking for a nice Strat made of ash he should keep the weight down to 7.5 lbs...or run the risk of getting a dead sounding guitar.

Whereas alder can weigh more and still sound good.

What do you guys think???
