Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

A lot of the "metal" sound comes from amps and effects more so than the guitars. I think if you plugged a vintage Strat into a Splawn or Ubershell and cranked the volume on the amp, then kicked in a "metal" pedal. It would work fine. It would probably work the same with a Les Paul.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

You can't make rules in music.

If it sounds good DO IT.

Record yourself brushing your teeth - and then put lots of distortion on it. There's some metal for ya!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I did a full set-up had my Strat tuned to B and did some metal with a Hotrail and full-size JB...

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Maybe YOU can't play metal on a Strat. Plenty of other guys do it just fine, though.

Man I even play metal on a Ukulele or blalaika.:friday:
But that doesn't give the typical Metal tone does it?
Yess you can do it ,like many people pay millions of dollars to make their Civic a dragrace car.
But it's still a civic ,and it farts when you just give "more gas" than it designed to.
Just compare Among The Living tone with ANY SSS Strat recorded metal tone. There is no comparison between the Bucker tone and a SSS.

If you compare guitars and ask people ,you will see that Jazz is a ES ,Blues is a Strat ,Rock is a LP or Strat ,and metal is a Jackson wich pops in players mind.

So again ,it is doable ,but it's not optimum.

Why not use the better tool when it's possible?

Because I don't think a Jackson (or anything with a 'bucker) is necessarily a "better" option.

If we're talking about going after a specific type of tone, like old-school thrash, then yeah, I'd agree with you. However, the statement was "Strats can't do metal". Metal is a whole lot more than Anthrax, and singles can get ridiculously heavy.

And I don't know why the "no pedals allowed" rule was enacted.... lots and lots of guys using guitars with crazy-hot buckers use pedals.

My bottom line is that a guitar tone has everything more to do with the amp/pedals and the player. I used to take my ES-175 (with just a neck P90) to my drummer friend's house, crank it through his Dual Recto, and get some of the heaviest tones. No, it obviously wasn't Vulgar Display of Power, Master of Puppets, or Rust in Peace tone, but it was still very much metal.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

jerryg is almost always wrong. i thought you guys had realized this by now.

anyway the only person more metal than me on this forum is Beer$ and we both use single coils a lot so...thread over.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Strats are famous for doing Metal and AC/DC renditions. (not)

Anyone who disagrees with everything you say is "wrong".
We arent talking p90's here. we are talking low output stock Strat single coils.
Im sure you sound like perfect dogazz cranking a Strat through whatever ungodly overcompressed crap it is that you own.
Not that ACDC is metal, but they are *only hard Rock, and can you imagine AC/DC sounding the same with a Strat? I mean, I've seen Angus Young use 335's, but even they have stinkin' 'buckers.
Nirvana was about as heavey as I'd wanna get with a Single coil , but they wrere pretty distorted alot I think.

...green day is metal? :laugh2:

my favorite metal tone using a strat is accept's metal heart. its really tight and snappy, yet sounds crushing. i love it. ...though not enough to get me to buy a strat :D

No Doubt..... Since when has Greenday been Metal? :) lol

You need to take Empty Pockets' posts with a pinch of salt. His tongue is planted firmly in his cheek. Or Beer's other cheek in this case.

Besides, I'm ten times more metal than Xander will ever be.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

:chairfall

Only 2 out of 11 of my guitars have singles actually.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

But seriously... How many of you people who claim that vintage single coils can't do metal have actually tried to play one through a real metal amp? All that blabber reads like 1+1=3 to this side of the screen. Ei ymmärrä, ei ymmärrä!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Stock 61/62 strat-nuff said

But off the top of my head there is also Iron Maiden & Judas Priest-forefathers of metal, KK and Tipton both used strats (KKs with singles), Dave Murray has played strats from the get go, and later Adrian did as well.

I think it's a silly argument that strats can't do metal- can an Ibanez RG do Jazz? Sure it can.

No doubt a single coil equipped strat or tele can be extremely difficult to learn how to play (especially with high gain as mistakes are amplified big-time) but that's a limitation of the player- not the guitar.

Edit- I may have misunderstood your question- you are looking for more modern players- I don't listen to any modern metal so cannot help ya there

i love Gary Moores strat/marshall 80's metal era!!!! in those days he used a lot of Boss pedals as well including a DS1 for a lot of his gain sounds

Me!
Actually ,the reason I got a NT Humbucker loaded guitar was the lack of balls about the SSS config.

I hate the twang ,the lack of midrange ,the hiss/hum and the jangly character for rythm playing.

They might be cool for leadwork ,but Rythm means Humbucker for me.
