Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

BC Riches can't do electronica.

In communist Russia, Strat does not play metal on you.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

jerryg is almost always wrong. i thought you guys had realized this by now.

Hey, I realized it a long time ago....

But yeah, it mostly has to do with the EQ of the pickup. Vintage Strat singles can work fine for metal (very clear and articulate) if there's plenty of gain on tap, but there's usually some extra work involved getting the EQ right, and if they're true single coils, it may not be a great idea given the hum....

That having been said, I'd still much rather use a JB or a Custom. They're made to be played under plenty of gain, have fuller EQ's all set up for it, and have the extra push to hit the amp harder.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Can stock vintage strats do metal?
Can you pound a railroad spike with a tack hammer?

In both cases, sure, but there's bound to be a better tool for the job.

However, remove the "vintage" and I absolutely disagree with the notion that strats cannot do metal (even modern metal). I present Exhibit A:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Seems like its a battle between "strats can do anything" and "I don't like how strats sound for metal." We're all on the same side, folks - myth dispelled?

A Superstrat is a strat with Humbucker. That's why it called Super.

:headbang: I LOLed at this.

BTW nice clip Beers. Dug it. The rhythm guitar still has some of the fizzy high end and weak chunkability that has always plagued my heavy strat tones (even with buckers), but it definitely pulls off the METALWZ.

That being said, if a newbie wanted to buy a guitar and he liked mainly metal and high gain hard rock, would anyone suggest he buy a true strat?

So we are all decided then, correct? ( Vintage ) Strats cannot do metal. /END THREAD

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

my bc rich does jazz...strats doing metal isnt that far of a stretch from there

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

My Ukulele can do metal and it can do classical and AC / DC.

My Strat can also do metal and classical and AC/DC.

It's just that my Uke and my Strat wouldn't be my first choice of guitar if I were really serious about playing those styles of music.

Me!
Actually ,the reason I got a NT Humbucker loaded guitar was the lack of balls about the SSS config.

I hate the twang ,the lack of midrange ,the hiss/hum and the jangly character for rythm playing.

They might be cool for leadwork ,but Rythm means Humbucker for me.

Good! And of course it's an issue of taste. All pickups are different from each other and one has to find the right one to suit his individual guitars, amps and playing. It's obvious that single coil pickups do jangle etc. but those properties can also be an advantage through different amps etc.

Now that we finally found a test subject, have you tried a hotter single coil for rhythm playing? I, for one, recently acquired a tele with a QP bridge and even though it's a single coil it's far from a vintage spec'd pickup.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Hang on, I don't even remember if this thread was about strictly SSS pup configured Strats not being able to do metal, or if they could have any pup configs:confused:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Not playing a guitar strictly for it 'not being metal enough' is absurd.

Well ,I tried the Mlmsteen Strat ,and the tone was ballsy enough ,but lacked fullnes.

Ofcourse I could put some 12s on it to get some balls ,but the scalloped neck would be obsolote then.

In studio envoirment ,you can compansate it with a fuller bass sound and some cool multitracking ,but live....It sounds really nasty with my type of playing.

The chug is not there ,the thumb is not there ,and the midds are not there.
This is my point.

But I am shure that Some special SCs could pull out better tones.
