Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Yeah and he switched to HBs since the strat tone was not enough!:flowers1:

Actually the switch was to the SG/P90's after the Strat's wiring stopped working. The rest of Black Sabbath, Paranoid. Master of Reality, and I think Volume IV were P90. :headbang:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

P90s sound heavier than humbuckers. There's no signal cancellation and they've got this snarly midrange growl that makes chords roar.

Agree totally with this statement.

Also, I usually stay out of these "I can pee farther than you" threads but I have to comment that anyone can use most any guitar for any type of guitar work (within reason-you know, the pickups aren't totally non-functional, etc).

The demand of the player (as well as what's reasonable from a cost perspective to the manufacturer) is what drives the market for new or different designs and really has nothing to do with the "intrinsic" nature (pros and cons) of what's currently available other than that.

I will close with this...I play metal all the time on a S-S-S Strat with coils wound to vintage specifications (around 6K). Sounds good to me (and that's all that matters). Just play what you want; the black and white thinking mentality, well :kabong:

I play metal and AC/DC all the time too on my Ukulele.

Yes my Uke can do metal or AC/DC just like your Strat can do metal or AC/DC, but neither my Ukulele nor your Strat would be my first choice for these styles of music.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

It's way more metal to abuse gear not designed for it past their limits rather than playing gear engineered for it well within their limits. That's the idea.

Empty Pockets' ideology doesn't seem so bad when you actually try it out.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

yeah that's how rock-n-roll was born. people in the 50's taking 15-watt amps and saying THESE AREN'T LOUD ENOUGH and cranking them up to the point that they were overdriving and overheating.

gimme vintage gear pushed to the edge, that's the true heavy right there.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I think Strats can do metal but only if they're outfitted with a full size bridge humbucker.

There's always exceptions and we can put together a list of them, but generally speaking, single coil Strat and Tele pickups just don't get that super saturated overdrive and metal grind required for metal, and even a single coil size Strat pickup through a good distortion pedal, doesn't sound as appropriate as a full size bridge humbucker pushing a Marshall.

Now if we're talking about vintage Led Zep tones, that's a different story. My old Tele through a Boss DS-1 and plugged into a smallish 50's Fender amp nails those tones. But I don't hear those old Led Zep tones as having much to do with "bagful of angry bumble bees" modern metal tones.

I've been having a lot of fun wailing through my new Ibanez Jemini distortion/overdrive pedal the last few days. But for those ripping modern tones, my Strats with a bridge humbucker are required.

Thanks for clarifying that.

So my Ukulele can do metal right ?

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

FACT: wanmei was funnier when he spoke exclusively in cryptic riddles.

FACT: an electric ukulele through a loud enough amp with a big muff in front of it would sound really heavy playing some minor chords.

...........The ultimate criptic riddle !

I'm still not quite clear as to whether you think my ukulele can play heavy metal or not.
If you say it can, then am I right in assuming my lute, cor anglais, trombone and kazoo can also do heavy metal ? :lmao:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

This whole thread is an example of herd mentality at its best.

Next week everyone will be listening to some band using some ridiculous, overpowered single-coils and we'll all sell our Les Pauls.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Hmm.
Actually A superstrat "is" leavung the herd and making a uncapable instrument a usefull instrument!
A Humbucker IS the revolution

The Herd mentality is sticking with the VINTAGE stuff and not accepting the change ,the technology and the new possibilities.

Yeah, in the 70s.

These days humbuckers are old news, and everybody and their grandma has an Ibanez. So a Strat doing metal would be outside the box.

It's all cyclical, eh? Perhaps there would be more progress if us guitarists stopped trying to emulate our heroes and tried to each find our own way.

Well I for myself am one of the "out of line" musicians.
I am getting my 1 piece Wenge 8 string guitar with Q-Tuner PUs (Check them!)
Tuned from High G to Low A. 6 whole octaves.
I don't even have a pot on the guitar.12 khz resonant peak baby!
Just an on-off switch with 50MegOhm resistance.

But I think you have right.
I really hate the fact that everyone wants to be like someone else. That pisses me off ,and shows how clearly marketing works and is effective.:friday:

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I like to play my guitars. When you think about it the word 'play' is to do with 'fun'. Kids play at the playground or in a playhouse or whatever... Foreplay can be pretty d@mn fun, when someone is 'just playin' they're having fun to some degree. People play computer/video games because living in a fantasy world or nuking mutants is fun.

Why So Serious?
