Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Strats do "classic" metal very well IMHO. As for thrash, death etc I'm not a fan, although Karl Sanders from Nile used strats for a period.

A strat with a humbucker (full size OR mini) in the bridge ISN'T a strat imo. It's like a GLP with a singlecoil in the neck- "WTF?".

I hate the rhythm tone on Yngwie's early albums but "Alchemy" had a heavy tone.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

i consider myself a pretty good rhythm player and i notice a difference when playing my strat. its not as heavy despite having a ceramic monster in the bridge, and strat fanatics will tell you its the player's fault but i beg to differ. yeah you have to try harder on a strat but that is due to an inferior design. not saying thats a bad thing but as a player i believe a guitar that transfers the most energy between the body and strings is doing its job right. all that power and sustain? thats a more accurate return from my pick attack. i dont see how a guitar can be praised for taking your input energy and losing it somewhere in translation. thats just my experience and i have a strat strapped to me as i type this. can it do metal? you bet your ass but i feel cheated by the end result.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I know what you're saying but that energy isn't lost. Instead it's channeled into other tones and subtleties that become your challenge to identify and exploit.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

for the 10 thousandth time, a Strat Cannot do Metal, if by "metal" you mean High-gain and black, death, Nu and other exteme metal.
Strats w/ stock and overwound pickups can do heavey metal up to and through the 80's .
Heck, a Gibson Les paul SG or Explorer or V isnt really even a metal guitar either they are too traditional..and cause a metal guitar has to *look* metal. Its has to look like a Jackson, ESP,High end Ibanez or some tripped out humbucker equipped transmogrified Gibson style axe.
If you arent hooked up with a true metal guitar, you may be playing metal allright, but it aint gonna fly; your gonna look like a dweeb..

Made for at least 5 years before there were humbucker pickups in any guitar...

Yep, but I'm sure most would associate the classic GLP sound with PAF humbuckers. My friends who are Gibson nuts certainly do.

Warren Haynes = GLP imo.

See if you can find a copy of Les Dudek's record "Say No More". It'll make a believer out of you. He gets some great tone on that platter.

People that play black metal can't afford good guitars and you see the nu-metal fa- I mean, 'guys' trying to look all 'pimp' using Les Pauls and PRSs. That clip was actually the first time the strat saw daylight in a while. It was weeping in it's case while I used my King V, flying V, Warlock and 7 string for metal, which is the punishment it gets for being chipped. I'm still kinda annoyed about that, it should have healed up by now. Maybe if I put a humbucker in it, the chip will heal up?

Sing for it perhaps?

I was almost about to post some demos my black metal band has done but... let's pass on them. There can't be any good metal tones there and I obviously can't afford any good guitars.

Taking hyperbole to heart is not very metal or tr00.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

And if those recordings weren't done with Strats then it's off topic anyway.
