Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Strats are not metal!!!
A super strat is not a strat. If a strat has a humbucker in it, it's not really a strat anymore. If it has a floyd or a kahler, it's not a strat. if it's got string through body and a recessed tune-a-matic, it's DEFINITELY not a strat.

I respectfully disagree because my two HHH Strats and my HH Tele still retain their twangy signature sound. To a lesser degree, but undeniably present.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

do you have vintage bridges on them? cuz I find that's the biggest culprit in making that strat sound.

my strat has a DMZ fast track 2 in it, and it still sounds mostly like a strat because of the vintage bent saddles and the trem.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Yngwie? yeah he doesn't play metal. he plays heavily overdriven shred stuff. His tone would not stand a chance against metallica or megadeth let alone carcass !

LP Jr with a P90 is not a Strat, but also not much of a "metal machine."

As for Strats not doing metal, I always post this one:

Kirk Hammett is playing a Strat in the video for One.

I may not be a fan of Strats, but they can be used for metal.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

I just plugged a stock Tele tuned to open C into my Vox Tonelab. Doesn't sound as crushing as a Dimarzio D-Sonic, but the bridge single coil does give me a really good thrash sound.

I agree with you to disagree. My HSS Strat with ebony fretoard and maple cap still sounds Stratty to my ears. Even with the humbucker there's a "twang" flavor to it. Compared to my V, the Strat definitely lacks a little bit of typical, chunky "heaviness" but more than makes up for this with increased clarity, less mud, and is easier to play fast.

+1 I can hear the "twang" in my HH tele with both the antiquity and a '78.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Who brought this dumb-ass thread back?

My turn. :D

Trevor Peres of Obituary.

Looks like a Duncan in the bridge. My guess is Custom.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

This thread is ****ing stupid. You retards need to stop digging up threads from three years ago that have nothing to do with anything.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

We need to find Gamera and have him kill this thread. I can't believe I've used this pic twice in a single thread.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Wait for my "You can't play Texas blues with a Gibson" thread.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

i use a s/s/s strat to play metal

And heres where the thread becomes legitimate. Everyone knows a Superstart can do metal, to suggest it couldn't is absurd.. but can Oudys Strat with a stock low output single coil do metal? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Not with a RAT, a Muff, a Swollen pickle, a Shredmaster, a OD-1 , a TS-9, a Ds-1, a whatever, a stock output Strat cannot do metal, unless your Blackmore, and friend, you aint Blackmore.
Blackmore had walls of marshalls and the best techs available, and there was not such a thinh as an overwound bridge. As soon as there was, Blackmore used them, Live. Yngiw uses lower output singles, but thats Shred/Neoclassical and when we say metal, its prety mcuh a given you mean heavy Metal High gain rock- at least a marshall JMP or JCM800 with a Screamer.
Hendrix wasnt heavy metal Perse, he was acid rock.

Yeah it doesn't.Not nearly. Your dreaming if you think a stock Tele pickup can do heavy metal. A John 5 tele can.

Dude, to say "Guitar x or pickup x can't do genre y" is plain ludicrous. I can get a useable metal tone out of my SSS strat with the help of the right pedal and the right EQ settings. I don't usually play metal, but I can if I need to.

Re: Stratocasters just don't do metal!

Is metal, as a musical style, so feeble that it can't exist unless it is performed using only certain instruments ? (and yes, I do realise that some instruments lend themselves to some styles better than others, but surely a musical style should transcend what is used to create it?)

A bad workman always blames his tools.

Now as a pretty successful thread killer, hopefully this thread might die from this contribution.

Seriously?

This thread is ****ing retarded. What the **** did the beatles record "helter skelter" with? Epiphone Casinos? maybe a telecaster in there? Stratocasters CAN do metal. Smoke on The Water, Purple Haze, not to mention Led Zep had some songs that were all about the tele sound. I used to use my Tom Delonge strat to play all sorts of metal covers live. worked out for me.
