string buzzing after string change

Hey everyone, I changed strings on my Warmoth the other night. I wanted to try some brighter strings so I went from GHS nickel rockers to DR tite fit strings. Actually maybe I had DR pure blues on before. Anyway, now that I've changed strings, I have a lot of buzzing on the frets. The guage did not change (10-46). What's going on?

Thanks for any help.

Re: string buzzing after string change

Brand new strings always sound a bit rattly to begin with.

If the core to wrap ratio on the DRs is different to the GHS then, despite being of the same nominal gauge, the tension loading may have changed. i.e. It is now lower.

Erm, does your Warmoth guitar feature a Floyd Rose-licensed vibrato? Did you change strings one at a time or all at once? :naughty:

When you change string brand or model, you generally can assume that the setup will have to be tweaked if not completely redone because of different core /wrap ratios and alloys having diffferent tensions.

Thanks. The brighter strings really didn't make that much of a difference - or it didn't do what I wanted it to, so I think I'll switch back to what I had.

It's a fixed bridge by the way.

This does not alter the fact that string tension affects neck curvature.

Changing back to your previous brand/type of string should restore the buzz-free action that you previously enjoyed. Just give the neck time to return to its previous degree of bow before adjusting anything.

The new strings put LESS tension on the neck than the old strings, giving the neck a BACKBOW. Time to get that hex key and loose that truss rod a little bit. A 1/8 of a turn should do the trick, no biggie at all.

HTH,
