String ferrule question.

I'm doing some upgrades and mods to my Patriot. Partly, just for the experience. I got my Hipshot bridge in today, and I need to get some string ferrules also. The ones from Stew-Mac are $6. The ones from Callaham are $18.

So, how important do you think a thing like a string ferrule is to sound? Will the Callaham be noticeably better than the Stew-Mac?

Thanks all.

Re: String ferrule question.

Check out www.guitarpartsresource.com , that's where I got the ferrules I'll be using for my upcoming project. Callaham has some really great parts, but they're also very pricey. On the other hand, I think Stew-Mac has a minimum order requirement.

Re: String ferrule question.

Yeah, I saw those. The only trouble with those is, I don't want the ones with the "lip". I need the straight-sided ones, like the SM's, and Callahams. I don't mind the min order, 'cause I'll be picking up a few other things at the same time.

I'm just wondering how much, if any, a ferrule might affect sound. I wouldn't think it would be much.

Oh ok, ferrules come in two sizes and you need the other :laugh2:. I am inclined to say that being overly picky about your ferrules would put you up there with Eric Johnson ;).

i don't think string ferrules make much of a tone change since they are so small. i'd just get whatever has the better price and fits what you need.

Thanks guys. I'm doing several subtle mods all at once on this thing, and I wanted to hear the cummulative affect of those changes, but at the same time, I don't need to throw money away. ;)
