String gauge for Drop-C 24.75" scale?

Hey guys, I am going to be playing some gigs with a band who has a significant amount of songs in Drop-C tuning (for those who aren't familiar, it's just like Drop-D, only a whole step down). I got a G&L Ascari as a Stupid Deal, and was thinking I would use this guitar. It has a 24.75" (Gibson) scale length - what gauge and/or brand of strings would you recommend? I want them to be thick enough to stay in tune and sound good, but ideally I'll still be able to bend strings. And I would really, really prefer to not have to mod the nut or tuners to fit much thicker strings. For what it's worth, I normally play Fender scale length guitars with .10s. Thank you for any help/advice!!

I would try either a 10-52 set or a set of 11s. You might want to look at DRs line of strings made for drop tuning called DDT strings. I use 10-52 for Drop C#.

I use 10-52 (skinny top, heavy bottoms) on my Les Paul for drop C and it works fine. I've used a few brands, D'Addario, Dunlop, EB Slinkies and Cobalts. All work the same IME.

My band plays exclusively in C and my main guitar is a Les Paul (24.75 as well). I use GHS Low Boomers, 11 - 53.

+1

Ghs always work well for me. I use 11-50. The dunlop light-heavy are good too. I don't use them as much because the high d in .10 isn't always strong enough.

I use the GHS low boomers (11-53 I think) for C# standard in a 24.75 guitar and they work great.

Depends more on the total tension of the set than the actual gauge, though high gauge usually equals higher tension. I would go with something high like 11 or 12 gauge on the high e, and I would avoid wound g strings. Gotta have high enough tension especially with tuning that low and a scale length shorter than 25.5", otherwise the low strings start to sound farty.

When I was playing Les Paul's in drop-c I used Infeld 11 to 53's. So, a set of 11's or 12's with a heavy bottom and you should be good to go.

you can do it with any gauge or string. depends on the sound you want. I tune to c# am have super slinky strings.

I just bought some heavy core dunlop 10 gauge I am waiting for shipping. looking for a different tone so I am going back to heavier gauge to try.

Re: String gauge for Drop-C 24.75" scale?

I go with a daddario balanced tension set 11-50 and swap out 50 for 54. That's on 25.5 scale though. Maybe you would like to swap out 54 for 56.

"slinky" feel akin to 10-46 on Fenders in Estd : 11-50 / 11-54
tighter, or for superlow action: 12-60

Go with DR's for softness and bendability at high gauge. DDTs or Pure Blues, depending on your gauge preferences (ddts have thicker low strings for same size 1st). Think its the nickel content, but might be something about the way they wrap them or some such thing....they bend nice and easy. And feel softer. At higher gauge even.

11-54. I dig the DDT strings. Not to mention the DR rep hooked me up with a few sets for free, hehe...
