Please read before voting and posting 9-24-2012*update this poll is planned as a multi part , with a end result to the highest average of all strings and their specifics*

Pick your gauge of string on the poll and put your brand of choice in your post. This is not a i hate this or mine better than yours.

Package pic would be nice!

Ernie ball 10-52 :feedback:

10-52

Usually EB or D'adarrio. Elixirs are good. I tend to avoid GHS.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

I voted for Other because I've never been a big fan of the normal gauge sets. I always use some sort of hybrid sets. I can play with normal gauges no problem but if there is a choice it's always a hybrid. 9-46 or 9-50 on strat scale guitars. 10-52, 10-56 or 10-60, sometimes something like 11-59 or so, on Gibson scale guitars usually tuned to D. In general I need more meat on the heavy strings for hard riffing.

Don't have any specific brand. I have used and still do use many different brands depending what is available. Ernie Balls, D'addarios, DR's, GHS's, Dunlops... Only brand I've had problems with is Rotosound. I just don't seem to be able to get good sounds out of them or keep them in tune.

However one brand I've been very impressed with is Aurora strings. The are coated string which you can get in almost any color: matte black or white, bright red, blue, green, gold etc. And you can get "rainbow" set in which every string is different colour. And they sound better than anything I've ever used. Very bright and yet they are coated.

So long story short If I had to scale down to one brand it would be Aurora. And two gauges would be 9-46 and 10-52 for different guitars.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

I use from standard 9's up to standard 12's depending on what guitar/ tuning I'm using.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

Other because I use either 9-46 or 10-46.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

OP why did you change from cobalts to normal EB's?

that's my bad i have recently started using Ernie ball cobalts, but i realized i dont have enough experience with them to say i use them outright,
Normal Ernie balls 10-52 ive been using for over 10 years and i can honestly say i use them.
I realized it was not a fair statement about cobalt's yet..
So with the best of intentions i'd rather post what im 100% sure of until , i have reached a conclusion for Cobalt's one way or another.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

super slinky, ernie ball. I find them easier to bend on a long scale neck, though i imagine one day i'll go to 10s like everybody else does...

Okay cool. I haven't tried the cobalts yet. Is there really a big difference and what is the difference? For me it's enough if it's just decently good string. I'm not too picky about them so they don't have to be anything special as long as they work but people seem to be pretty excited about the cobalts.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

pure nickel 11's

usually dr pure blues 11-50 but ive been experimenting with other pure nickel 11's

I can say this about Ernie Ball Cobalt's, only the wrapped strings are cobalt plated. The tone you get is pretty darn bright in the bridge, so i really recommend backing off the tone knob.
But if you like to have your guitar pup's set to the middle selection or neck you can get great jazzy runs and really silky leads on those positions.
\
I don't think the price justifies the results, if are going to record with them or play live absolutely, but i cant get behind them for everyday use so far.
That is where i am at so far in my experience.

There are some unanswered question floating around other forums especially the Ernie ball forums. I have personally seen peoples posts asking if cobalt is toxic and if the strings will wear frets out over normal usage, that's just on the EB forums. I hope i have given sufficient enough explanation.

That seemed very honest answer and sufficient enough indeed. Thank you.

I used to use .10s on all my electrics. A few months back tho, I switched to using .009s on my 25.5 scale axes and .10s on my 24.75 scale axes. Accoustics, Im still kinda undecided as to what to use as I dont change strings often on accoustic

Im sorry, forgot to mention that I use D'addario

Dunlop Heavy Cores 11 to 50's.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

D'Addario EXL110. Nice middle ground between price and durability, tonewise they're fine, and 10's break less often than 9's.

Re: String gauge of choice( please participate )

It all depends on the guitar...

I use 10's and 11's on most of my guitars, I've got 10-52's on a guitar and I'm about to put real heavies on one of them (12's or 13's)...I use 14-68's on my Baritone so it just depends on the guitar and what I'm using it for.

Try the GHS burnished nickel's...the 11 set stops at a 48 but if you can deal with that they are GREAT strings. I think they sound as good as the DR's, they last longer and I've yet to have any intonation issues with them!
