ok to pre face i own a bass, i dont need a new bass, im not trying to replace my bass. i just have an unnatural curiosity. moving on ive been thinking just how low can i tune a standard guitar (esp ltd 256)? drop c? easy. drop a? with heavier strings yes. but what can i do if i take a set of 8 string strings and put them on it? well normally play dunlop 10-13-17-26-36-46 so i boght 10-13-17-30-42-54-64-74 and i THINK if i put the 17-74s on i maybe can go to like idk drop e? is that a thing? idk its 7 am i havent slept. the only reason im making a post is that way i can call it science because the difference between science and stupidity is documentation. back in a few with results

update time!

i put the strings on but.... idk. like im not worried about any thing like not tooo thick. all strings are tuning okish for new strings but the low e (74) could need time, might work better on a strat? maybe too low? who knows. maybe i just have a crappy tuner

The first thing you would run into a problem with would be the nut, it would have to be recut. Then, even with such a low tuning, you would probably have to do some serious adjustment of the truss rod. The last problem would be setting the intonation. I doubt that the bridge would have enough range of motion to properly do so.

yeah intonation is WAY off. and nut doesnt quite like the strings. as far as truss rod goes because of slackiness in the strings i think is ok. idk. im only gonna leave it for like 2/3 days maybe a week then back to 10s then either back in to storage or to pawn shop.

Yup, lots of problems arise with stuff like this. Surprised you didn't have to drill out the tuner...had to do that a few times on 7-8 strings when they wanted to go up a guage or two
