Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

Was thinking about a 25 pack of D'Addario Strings - Probably would last me 3 years or so.

Used to be a rule of thumb to buy fresh strings in smaller quantities - with the sealed packs, any reason not to stock up? I experimented with the coated strings, not sure they are worth the extra cost.

I always buy in bulk. Much better prices in bulk. Once you find a string brand/type/size that you love, buy a bunch.

I have not found that coated strings are worth the extra cost. Just my personal opinion. Many people like them or there wouldn't be so many on the market.

The 25 set in a box is a good deal, but if you don't use then the strings are exposed to the air & they will tarnish diminishing the quality of the strings

My Luthier buys these and he goes through a box about every two weeks.

You might be better off with these. A 10 pack for $30 to $35. IMHO is a better deal. Each set are individually packaged so you can leave them on the shelf for uite some time & not have to worry about them going bad on you. This makes each set about 3.50. At 89$ for 25 it works out to about 3.50 so I would go with the 10 pack.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I buy 10 pack Dunlops at a great price. My son used to work for Musicians Friend and was able to get the 10 pack for less than $10. I bought three from him.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

Thanks -

Never looked at the 25 pack that closely. No point in buying them like that even with a Nephew using out of the same stash.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I used to randomly buy 2 sets of strings whenever I got a paycheck. Later on when things got tough, I always had strings. I say buy in bulk whenever possible.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

About once a year or so I check MF or Sweetwater and see what's the best deal for the string gauges I need and I buy about 10 or so packs per guitar. They actually last me a bit more than a year, but like Astro said, it's always good to have some stock.

Right now I'm eyeing that deal on Sweetwater for the GHS Boomers...they're like $14 for 5 packs, which is a savings of about $8. That's kind of what I paid for last year's stock of strings (I bought a Dean Markley box of 10 for around $30). Not bad, but you could probably find something even better if you look around.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I buy the 12 packs of EB regular slinkys and skinny top heavy bottoms. They last more than a year, and I string 3 guitars with 'em. It's cheaper, you never have worry about running out, and it's just nice to know I can change my strings whenever I want.

Buy bulk, you won't regret it.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I always buy in bulk. Ernie Ball doesn't make a Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom in stainless steel anymore, so I buy bunches of 12 of the corresponding guages in SS and put them together at home.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I buy in bulk, Usually I just get 5 packs of EB 9's every few weeks from the best buy by my house. $3.79 a pack at Best buy while al the other stores sell them for $5+

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

By the way, I've been looking for some string deals, and here's what I found besides those GHS @ Sweetwater.

The Music Zoo has Fender Bullets at $0.99 a pack.
Sweetwater has D'Addario 3 packs at $9.
The Dean Markleys I always buy seem to be back on sale at $26 for a 12 pack.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

Just buy the large bulk box and when not using, shove it in a plastic bag and seal that puppy up.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I always mean to buy in bulk but whenever I need strings, I NEED em; so I just go up the road to a local store and buy a couple packs.

Seeing that bulk box up there makes me think I need to give D'Addario another go.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I probably buy 3 to 6 sets at a time. I've installed strings that were at least 5 years old (EBs) with no issues. I am sure D'Addarios keep even better in their sealed pouch.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

I change stroings on everything around every 3 months, everything at intervals. I think I got through around 3 dozen sets of electrics on average in a year.

Re: Strings - Buy in Bulk vs Small Quantites

@ $14 for a set of quality strings in Australia and over a dozen guitars in use
at any given time, buying luthier packs or boxes of ten from the US is the only way to go.

Hell, Elixer's are $25 to $30 retail here when I can get them for a third of the price
per set delivered from the US.

I buy bulk in all gauges, electric, bass, baritone, acoustic, classical and even mandolin.
