Curious, because the last two guitars I obtained (one a Guitar Center find, the other eBay) fell into the category of being afflicted...
In one case the neck seemed fine until one day I noticed a buzz; realized it had back-bowed and that the (un-tampered with by me) truss rod was totally loose. In the other case, the neck did have a small amount of relief, but backing off on the truss rod resulted in no additional relief (it too was very loose, and relief was not much.)
Both rods actually function. The first trick I tried was stringing with ridiculous heavy gauge and tuning several steps high... No dice. In both cases I was actually able to fix by releasing the truss rods, then carefully flexing the neck forward, till the relief "stuck."
Is there something in the air causing this to happen to my guitars, or any way to prevent this? Is my fix legit? I live with about ten other guitars that have never suffered from this.
