Studio Monitors - Computer

Right now I’m using old Boston Acoustics powered computer speakers with sub with by modeler for practice. Sounds ok, but not great. They are also the speakers that get used for any sound emitted from my computer. These speakers sound like they are starting to go… so I’m wondering if a pair of studio monitors would be ok for both the computer based recording and for general everyday use. I’m mainly curious as to what set would be a good set to use. I admittedly know nothing about monitors (brands, quality, etc) so I’d need a hand in selecting a good pair at a reasonable price. I’m not sure how much I want to spend right now, but can tell you I need to keep the price as low as possible while still getting a decent product.

So, any suggestions?

KRK Rokit's are very good, I'd aim for the 5" driver.

Even cheaper, the M-Audio BX5's have treated a few of my friends very very well, especially for the price.

You're looking at around 250-300+ for a decent set of monitors. You pretty much get what you pay for in the monitor world. Do a search in the tips and clips and you'll find all kinds of monitor recommendation threads.

I've got a 10 year old set of Tanoys that I wouldn't trade for a million bucks because I know them inside and out- That's one of the keys, find a pair of near fields that allow you to predict what the final product sounds like in any room- Not easy, but start somewhere and your ear will adjust-

Definately recomend rec. audio.pro as one of the best sources

A search would probably get you a lot of good info on power vs non-powered-
Peace

Re: Studio Monitors - Computer

I do not have a problem with spending $300 on a pair of powered monitors. I actually thought that was on the low end. I can't justify spending over $500 on them, though.

I need powered monitors because I have to other way to power them. We are talking about a small room in an apartment that doesn't warrant fancy audio equipment and studio sound quality playback. I need to replace computer speakers, and I simply thought that a pair of monitors might be a little better than computer speakers. Remeber that these will also pull double duty in that they are for general listening as well as playback for recording (not that this should matter).

Re: Studio Monitors - Computer

The price on powered monitors in general has really dropped so you should have no problem picking up a pair of those. Take a look at Fostex, Alesis, KRK, and Event for good budget monitors.
