Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Interesting. As someone who has previously run TWO Rats on his board at once, and currently runs an FTL into a Box Of Rock (some great combinations of gain staging between the two channels of the FTL and the Distorton and Boost sides of the BoR, my interest is piqued.

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

sounds like a great idea man!

can't wait to see the end results!

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Another satisfied customer here. I love my Raptor and would be happy to purchase another RD pedal. ;)

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

cool man - what are you going to call it?

Viper?

Pegasus?

You wouldn't dare go for the big G...

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Starbuck totally deserves a pedal like this named after her. She's feisty.

:32:

I was thinking just this evening that I should have gotten an FTL.:(

What size footprint are you anticipating?

I'd like to make it fit in a 1590BB enclosure (4.7" x 3.7" x 1.18"), same as the FTL. My only concern is that there will be seven knobs and two toggles, so I will either need to be clever with my PCB layout, or go up to a larger enclosure. One thing I want to do this time is mount the jacks on the top of the pedal.

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

hmmm..... I was thinking about getting the GT-500 sometime in the not-so-distant future, and then this is some competition, but I have no way of knowing what yours sounds like.... and I don't have that much money to toss at things like this... decisions, decisions.

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Dude, I know you're still in the initial design and development stages of this and obviously I'm not trying to rush you or anything, but do you have a rough idea of when you're going to begin taking orders? Financial planning has never been my strong suite, but I was serious when I said I'm going to start putting money aside for one of these. I was actually just going through a box of old stuff, looking for something to sell to go in my RD fund...

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

If your guestimation of the price is even close to accurate, I'd be very tempted by one. Keep us posted. I missed out last time and still regret it.

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

I've been finding myself wondering if you've ever considered putting together a kit of one of your pedals, for the guys who might like to try their hand at building one. That way, you could get the stuff together for more Raptors and FTLs, but not have to do the tedious work yourself.

See my reply to Kam below for timelines, if that helps your decision. This thing won't sound too much like a GT-500, but it will be a similar idea for sure.

I'd like to give myself one month for each phase, so ...

Design: February
Prototyping: March (I would post clips of the prototype in action)
Ordering/procurement: April
Production: May

In other words, I would expect I'd be taking orders in early April and shipping late May.

Please note that these are rough estimates only. I'm a one man operation with a full time job, a band, and a video game addiction, so things could change.

Do you see your Raptor being bumped off your board by this new pedal?

I suspect the Raptor will stay on my main board, mainly because I don't really need a distortion pedal. However, I'm currently putting together a home practice rig based around a simple one channel amp (Epi Valve Jr is the current front-runner), and this new pedal would be a great fit there.

I should point out that the overdrive side of the as-yet-unnamed new pedal will not be a Raptor in a different shell. The key differences are:

- No tone knob. The Raptor tone stack (one of its key distinguishing features from a stock TS) will still be there, but it will be hard wired to the equivalent of having the tone knob at 12:00.

- Fat switch from the FTL Drive will be making a comeback (the Raptor was hard-wired with a "fat mod" if the customer requested it).

- Bright switch mimics the Presence knob on the FTL Drive. Turning the switch on is similar to having the Presence up high, which adds a nice high frequency sizzle.

I've been finding myself wondering if you've ever considered putting together a kit of one of your pedals, for the guys who might like to try their hand at building one. That way, you could get the stuff together for more Raptors and FTLs, but not have to do the tedious work yourself.

I've thought about that too, and I'm not considering it at this time. Reasons:

- I would have to dedicate a great deal of time to writing build instructions.

- I would have to design the pedal in such a way that a novice could easily assemble it, which limits me quite a bit.

- I don't want to answer support e-mails from noobs.

- Quality Control ... if I control the entire manufacturing process, I can make sure that bad units don't get shipped out. If I let other people build them, they might do a crap job, which might get heard by others, which affects my reputation.

I'm not ruling out the possibility of kits in the future, but right now I'm not interested.

I can certainly see those points. Only way to make them perfect is to do it yourself.

Excellent, dude. Thanks. :)

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Im not savy with all the tech talk. can you say how this will differ from the Raptor/FTL tonally? IM VERY interested!

Re: Successor to the FTL Drive and Raptor

Well, for starters, it's a twin pedal, i.e. two distinct effects in one box. The FTL Drive is one effect with a foot-switchable boost. Instead of one effect that has two "channels", this pedal will have two distinct effects that can be used independently: a distortion and an OD.

The OD side will sound very much like the Raptor, since it is basically a Raptor with different controls. The most noticeable difference will be the clean mode. With the FTL Drive I had a clean mode (clip select 6), but since I was too cautious with the design I wound up not giving it enough headroom to be truly useful as a clean boost. If you take a resistor (R6) out of the FTL circuit it adds a TON of clean volume to the clean mode (position 6 on the rotary switch), and it won't distort until you turn the gain quite a ways up.

So, the OD side of the pedal will have three modes: vintage (same as the Raptor's vintage mode), modern (same as the Raptor's modern mode), and the new clean boost mode.

The distortion will be similar to a Rat with a more advanced tone stack. If you want to know what that will sound like I'm sure there are dozens of Rat demo clips up on YouTube. Think Gilmour's lead tone from Animals and The Wall and you'll have a pretty good idea. The main difference between this and a normal Rat is that I'll be replacing the simple tone control with a Marshall-style tone stack with treble, mid, and bass controls. It will be a more versatile Rat basically.

The distortion will be first, then the OD. The idea here is that you'll be able to dial in your fundamental tone with the distortion, then boost it with the OD. I'm pondering including some jumpers to let people choose which effect is first in the chain, but that's a maybe.
