Suddenly this pedal does not exist: Overdrive

Another option if I had to, a Boss DS-1 Distortion. I'd of course mod it a little bit to make it not so fizzy and more workable like the 80's versions. Wouldn't take much.

The EVH stuff doesn't need an overdrive to sound heavy, tight, and modern.

IMO, the red channel almost sounds like a pre-boosted Recto or block letter 5150.

*My* tone is an SD-1-boosted Recto. But I could totally be happy with a 5150III.

I don`t use overdrives. I have amps that give up the sound I need. Now, if distortion disappeared, looks like I'm chicken pickin country from now on.

No sweat to lose od. I could get by with any pedal that can be used for boost.
EQ, distortion, compressor, even my LS-2 can do a boost.
Just using a juicy active set of pickups like the 81/85 at 9v is enough with some amps, even for molten metal.

I could get any tone I needed with an EQ, clean boost and my Mesa Road King. I could totally skip all OD or distortion pedals and not miss them at all

I have to say - I find this a little surprising. I kind of perceive OD pedals as being very important to a lot of people who are very particular about them!

I would have to do it like they did in the 70's. Jumper the amp inputs, turn the bass up, midrange up, treble down, presence up, and put a treble booster in front of the amp.

Well, you survived the disappearance of Chorus pretty easily. Let's give you a hard one this time. You wake one morning to find the Overdrives are all gone. Not gonna be so easy this time. TS9's, 808's, SD-1, Blues Drivers, and every other non "Distortion" box just doesn't exist and all the knowledge of humanity can't bring them back.

* Natural amp OD is fine. If your amp does that....well enough. For you.
** Straight up booster like MXR Micro Amp, Keeley Katana, etc is OK. Klon, RC Boosts, anything that adds grit itself is not.

How does this effect you?
Can you survive?
How do you get by?
Will you quit playing?
Can you go on?
What about that Fender amp???

Go!

Is something like a Friedman Buxom Boost acceptable? It’s just a 3 band eq and a boost knob which just hits the amp harder and doesn’t necessarily add gain.

I’d keep my DIY Stratoblaster to drive the amp harder, and use my Katzenkonig for the heavier stuff.

I had the worst gremlins at practice about a year ago. My board went down and the Marshall was acting up. I plugged directly into the Fender M80 with no effects, just a cord, and was able to play the entire set.

With a good tube amp, drive or distortion pedals are unnecessary.
I was just thinking about putting together an FX-only pedalboard to use with my Friedman.

About that Fender amp - they break up nicely too, it just takes turning 'em up.
So, high stage volumes, or a good attenuator, or maybe a Rangemaster... Or just a small amp.
There's a reason why blackface Deluxes that could be had for $200 in the 90s now sell for upwards of $3K.

It depends on what type of tone you’re after. I have a Splawn Quickrod and although it is capable of a ton of gain, I prefer it’s tone when I boost it. It allows me to lower the gain from the amp and get a more harmonically rich tone than I can get from the amp alone.
It’s how the tone of the 80’s was made.

If you’re after a classic rock, blues, jazz etc type tone, then sure….no boost necessary.
