Suggest me a Gibson

I have no idea about these amps i just know i like the sound of Kevlar's mercury AND his 1483. I'm willing to go either way. If their's a Gibson amp that's cheaper than a 1483 and it sounds a lot like the Silvertone 1483 even better. I liked the 1483 more than the Mercuy so i'm leaning towards the 1483. Describe the differences including wattages and what not. If you could suggest a good Gibson amp that gives a good old school sound (a la Jack white-ish, or the 1483) that would be great. I would probably be using this with my Teisco which is pretty high output even though it's vintage.

It has to below about $500

Thanks

Re: Suggest me a Gibson

The 1483 is a great %100 all tube amp using pre amp tubes and two 6L6 power tubes! This amp is comparable in tone to an amp like a Fender Deluxe also a similiar amp and all %100 tube circuit. I have not looked at what Gibson has now for tube amps.

The Mercury amp is a hybrid having a transitor pre amp and a single ended (SE) EL84 power tube much less wattage and less clean head room I would think, I have not heard one, but people do like them too. The 1483 with the two 6L6 would have a whole lot more clean head room volume wise.

Hope this helps some!

It does help qute a bit, This levels the playing field a bit. So the 1483 has a 1x15 and is 50 watts?

thanks!

I'm definetely leaning towards the Mercury just listening to the clip. It does sound a little dark though but that may be the settings.

I would say with two 6L6's its approx. 50 watts vs the single EL84 of the mercury at approx. 5-8 watts, sounds like a nice practice amp to me.

Re: Suggest me a Gibson

I would have to say only if its miked and boosted through the PA system.

Are there any cheaper amps that have a sound similar and an early breakup similar to the Mercury (knob wise, not level wise) that may be giggable without as much boosting?

Re: Suggest me a Gibson

wait.....every piece of info i can find (including schematics) say that the mercury (I & II) were powered by 2 6l6s. This levels it out again.

Re: Suggest me a Gibson

I greatly dig my 1962 Falcon (GA-19RVT)

Two 6v6s putting out around 20w into 1x12.

That's pretty much exactly the specs I'm looking for! I would like it with el84s though. I like the sound of the GA-5T Skylark. Now that is what I've been looking for.

Clips??
