suggest New High Gain Amp

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

All I can say bout the Traynor YCS-100 is try before you buy. Make sure the amp is OK in person before purchasing it. After that, pray that your amp doesn't develop issues just before NAMM if it's still under warranty.

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

Cornfords are nice, but definitely highly priced in North America.

I would suggest a Soldano HR series, or my current amp, a used Trace Elliot SpeedTwin if you can find one. The Traces are custom shop, all tube amps that go for silly cheap alot of time.

Of course, both of these are more Marshall-y that Boogie-y, but I'm definitely more in the first camp.

devastone how would you compare the Soldano to the Speed Twin?

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

On the high gain channel, the Speed Twin is in Soldano/Bogner territory, the mid gain is JCM800, the clean channel is like a Fender preamp through a Marshall power amp (basically what it is). It's a great amp, I just saw one go for less than $500 on ebay, I almost cried:) I bought mine for a little under $800, and it's worth every penny, they were around $2K new. These are a stupid deal for what they are going for on the used market. They will also run EL34s or 6L6s, I'm running EH 6CA7s in mine now and really like them.

I had a HR50+ once too, another one of my favorite amps, more basic with less bells and whistles than the Trace, but had killer tone, I haven't played a SLO, probably shouldn't... The high gains are similar, the Soldano may be a little more organic sounding, but I've never had a chance to try them side by side.

Hope that helps,
Roger

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

I'd look at offloading a current amp to boost the coffers, and then going after a secondhand bogner shiva combo or Soldano Reverbosonic. Who knows, you may not even have to do that to get one in.

I personally don't recommend the JSX (too XXX sounding when wound up), the H&K (everything they do is voiced very bright to my ears) or the Engls (sound fine, but you're getting Peavey build for boutique pricing).

The best value in high gain amps for me out there right now has to be Scott Splawn's competiton and Quickrod. Heads only though. Still, I don't think your 800 or 5150 would last long if you got your hands on one.

ya i tried one in person and was impressed.... it seemed to work for me alright... sad to hear there is some lemons out there... It would be much cheaper then some of my other choices

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

-what about CARVIN'S V-3?? They say it sounds like Mesa & Marshall(you can choose diff.tubes w/switch)--it's $999.00(head)or $1250(combo2x12)-they all come w/GROOVETUBES & you can send it back in 10 days if dont loike it....

--I HAD a Marshall DSL401---bedroom only--it broke 3 times($80. each time)--it got so hot it would fry ityself--after the third breakage I got it fixed & sold! It did sound good even without pedals BUT it broke 3 times in 1 year!!

--I'm gonna try CARVIN V-3------I'll let ya know.

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

If your looking for something that can give you Stach or Vai, then check out the Peavey Stach sig head or the Carvin Vai sig head, odds are if Stach and Vai play through these amps they're what your looking for.

ya i am interested in that JSX head for sure.... the larger combo too... Never played a Carvin in my life, don't see a lot of that mail order stuff in Canada... the duty tax kills it....

But one side reason i like the JSX head is i could use it thru my 5150 cab until i get a different cab...

Re: suggest New High Gain Amp

Back to Marshall Land... what would be the big tone difference between the TSL60 Head and the TSL100 head.... 100 watts is overkill for me!!! But at the same time i hear volume pressure wise there is not much difference between a 100 and a 60.....

Tone difference - I have no idea, but both 60 and 100 watts are overkill. You seem to keep coming back to the TSL... If you go that direction, you should consider getting it modded.

i used to gig with a 5150.... 120 watts... it has massive pregain mind ya... volume controll was on 4-5 most nights... Ya it was over kill but worked... I'd switch to a small 1x12 cab in small bars... full 4x12 outside gigs..

Looks like a band for me is around the corner in the spring and i would love a new 3 channel amp...

I'll have to check into the KOCH line... the local shop is now a dealer...
