Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

Re: Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

I would advise you to not get anything with MDF. It will not hold up to the rigors of gigging. The birch plywood or solid pine are your best choices.

And my question is: Why stereo? Where will you be using this?

Its small but noticeable. If you're gonna just dime the amp and play loud and fun, just build a couple boxes and stick speakers in them. Bubbles and voids in the wood make for weird dead spots in the sound coming out. Pine is softer so it imparts a little warmth to the sound. Mdf adds no resonance or vibration or anything; its just dead.
Again if youre just wanting to play build a cab out of anything the speaker will fit in and go.

I am not a pro but still I want to enjoy my tone and the idea of stereo delay has stuck for a while. I plan using a pream then a SS power amp that can do stereo. A couple of 1x12 is easier for my to carry vs a heavier 1x12, and I don't think I need a 4x12 either for its power or heavy weight. Where to play? It would be a closed garage for now.

After reading more about it and watching this video now I understand what they mean with voidless.

Now I need to understand more about how the size of the cab helps/changes the tone. There are different sizes out there, some as big as a combo amp.

Voidless Baltic Birch is plywood, and they all use it. Some of the best cabs are made out of it. ;)

If you build open back cabs the size means far less. Closed or closeable, I would suggest looking up the measurements of an Orange 112 and making a box that size out of baltic birch or pine.

Re: Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

MDF sucks tone. Good quality plywood has a ring to it. I have one of their 1X12s with a Cannibis Rex in it. My cab has a convertible back, which is closed at the moment. It put's out quite a big sound, in part because it's rated at 103 dbs. I'm thinking of pairing it with one of their Rocket 50 cabs. The Rocket 50 doesn't have a good low end, but the high mids and highs are nice. The Cannibis Rex has plenty of bottom and low mids. It might sound killer in stereo.

Re: Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

Finally, I was able to locate some birch plywood (russian they say), they have different thickness like 12mm, 15 mm and 18 mm. I think 12 mm should be fine considering that is meant to be a stiff material and I don't want to get the too much weigth. Now one of my friends offere to do the labor, now we need to design the thing, choosing the proper size and also make it convertible open/closed back.

As I have read so far size does matter for closed/sealed back and the speaker, it seems like the wrong design leads to wrong speaker operation, but I wonder how much of that can actually lead to a bad tone, on the other hand there are lots of closed back combos that do have a small grill in the back so I guess real closed back 1x12 or 2x12 are not that common. Is that what the call a port? Does adding a port help to get me closer to the punchy sound of real closed/sealed back and yet not worry about calculating the proper size for different speaker?

Re: Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

I would at least use the 15mm. It's just a hair under 5/8".

The 12mm is only 0.47", which isn't even 1/2".

Re: Suggestion for a pair of custom 1x12 cabs?

I just learned something new today: Depending of the desired speaker there will be some optimum sealed cab dimensions, others may not give you the best of that speaker. Now that is challenging but I also learned Eminence has a software called Designer that takes into considerations speaker characteristic parameters and can provide an optimal size for the speaker cabinet. Maybe I should look for a free alternative.

Definitly first I need to play around with open back and get to know the relative deferences of speakers, find the one I like the most in that configuration and maybe then I can try to find a sucsesful closed back replacement out there and just use the same dimension :)
