Suggestions for replacing neck PU on Washburn J6 Wes Montgomery guitar

I'm thinking about upgrading the neck pick-up on my J6 to either a Duncan 59 or the Duncan Jazz (SH-2). I have the Duncan 59's on my Sheraton II and love the sound. I'm mainly going to be using the J6 for Jazz. Any suggestions are welcome. If I was going to try and emulate a particular sound it would be that of Chuck Loeb. His tone is incredible.

Does anyone else have a Washburn J6 with upgraded pickups? I would love to hear your comments.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Ken:
Just wondering-Why do you think the Jazz PU would be a better choice than the 59?

jazz is slightly brighter IMO. more jazz like tone, while 59 has a more PAF-ish tone?

i dont know, never really used 59's before.

plus you said u wanted to play only jazz on that guitar so i guess SD named the Jazz pup coz its good for jazz? hah

The first thing to consider is if you want a spongier woodier tone from an Alnico 2 pickup, or an articulate punchy Alnico 5.

One pickup that amazes me when it comes to punch, clarity, and output is actually the the Jazz Bridge model in the neck position. The Jazz N is a great pickup, but since the bridge model is still low output, yet punchier, it works great in my LP with a Custom Shop Brobucker bridge. That set would sound phenomenal in your hollowbody. I like the 59 neck too, but the lows can be a bit boomy for rhythm playing. The boomy lows really sound great for lead though....and that's what the 59 is best at...leads. The Jazz B in the neck has the authority of the 59 neck, but the bass is pulled back a little, making it great for both rhythm and lead.

If it were my guitar, I'd probably use a 59 or Custom 5 bridge, with a Jazz Bridge neck. Or, if I wanted the warmer looser sound of A2, I'd get a Seth set, or a CC/Seth N. One reason I even suggest the C-5 or CC for the bridge pickup is because they both sound vintage, but have a bigger sound. If you use your volume control, you can get soft smokey tones, or put them on 10 and ride on top of the mix.

If you're chasing Wes' tone, get a 59, which is pretty close to what came stock in his L5.

That pickup, along with a good set of flats and playing with your thumb should get you some pretty cool jazz tones. :burnout:

I find a 59 Bridge in the neck position will give the closest tone to the old Wes tone.

To add a personal disclaimer: I havent tried the Seth Lover, but seeing as it is based off of the original design as well it should also do amazing in its role in a jazz guitar. I find I'm a little less picky about humbuckers in jazz guitars as with the tone knob and volume down, the differences in pickups get a little muffled.

One of the best SD pickups I've heard in big box archtops for the legit jazz tone is the Seth Lover...the '59 is still pretty good, though.

I think you could use a Seth--it's one of my favs for jazz tones. Gibson '57 Classic will also give a very warn tone.. The Burstbucker 1 is also very versatile, but brighter than the Seth and the '57.

The choice is articulate and defined (A5) versus soft, squishy, curvy and warm (A2).

BB, have you tried both? if so, how would you describe their differences?
