25's Nemesis
Hello all.

I have in my possesion a zebra JB. Now, I've tried this JB (and others) in all of my guitars, with different magnets and pots and with different wiring schemes. It has gone from terrible to good sounding, but I have never been blown away by this pickup in any of it's guises.

I have decided to ship it back to Duncan and having it rewound. Apperently, I like low to medium output pickups in all of my guitars. The hottest I'll go is the CUstom line up and that's depending on the guitar.

I have a couple of thoughts on a possible wind for this JB:

Option 1:
Brobucker Specs. Due to unforseen financial difficulties (traffic ticket), I was not able to order a Bro. Perhaps this is my chance.

Option 2:
Pearly Gates ++. I love the Pearly Gates, I love the Pearly Gates +, and I'll probably like a Pearly Gates + overwound about 15-20%.

Option 3:
Parallel Axis Blues spec. I like the description of this pickup and everybody's review of it, but I don't like the looks of it. Besides, if it's wrapped around the JB's bobbins, I'l be able to use it in either my Hamer or my LP. I don't have any Floyd equipped axes, so this might be my chance to try one out.

Option 4:
Overwound Antiquity. Take a standard Antiquity spec and overwind it 10-15%.

Option 5:
S Deco. It's already in duncan's CS lineup and apperently it works. 12k in my LP would be a ton of fun.

Option 6:
Benedetto A6 spec. I've been very, very curious as to how these pickups perform. I would love to get one, but $140 is a bit steep for a pickup that not only I have never heard, but one that nobody I know has any info on. A rewind would be considerably less expensive and would gvive me a chance to try what could very well be an excellent bridge 'bucker.

Y'all take a vote and decide for me. All of these options are too appealing for me to choose amongst them. All help would be appreciated

Oh yeah, if you guys think that there's a pickup or spec out there that the JB would be worth rewinding to, please let me know. :burnout:

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

That's such a wide spectrum of tones and outputs you've described that it's hard to make a choice because there's nothing to help us zero in on what sound you're looking for. It looks like everything and nothing at the same time.

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

I'm looking for a big sounding, moderate output ' bucker. Nothing too hot, but a bit thicker than a normal PAF. Basically, I just want something different than what I have now. I'm not looking for a specific tone, just something else.

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

Well, I opted for "other". The Benedetto was tempting, but why go for off the shelf when you can have one wound to YOUR specs.

So, instead of sending it to Duncan, I'll recommend sending it to our own Zhangliqun for a re-wind. I had him do a rewind for me on an old pup. It should be here in a day or so, so I'll post the results once I get it wired up and have ago with it. From his description of the scatter wind, mags used and his tonal reveiw, it sounds like it's exactly what I wanted. I'm stoked!

Being a COFPJ ( Certified Old Fart Pickup Junkie ) I'm thrilled to find another talented winder on this board who will listen to what you want, take your guitar/gear and style into consideration and wind ( or re-wind as the case may be ) just what you want.

Just something to consider........

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

I like the JB in Fender style guitars, but I already have my alder/maple Carvin set up with one which leaves me with a spare JB.

As far as what I like, I like tight lows, a good amount of mids, and above all, I like to hear the guitar come through the pickup. I don't want a pickup that will excessively mask the inherent sound of the woods in my guitars.

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

I would go in this direction. As i think you might be pleased with a crossing of a Custom and a JB. The JB has a 44AWG with about 8,3+8,3k and the Custom is a 43AWG with about 7+7k. I would leave the JB wind in the inner coil (slug) and put a 7k or little more with 43AWG on the screw coil. I would also use a A8 with this wind.
Another pro is that you have to pay only one coil rewind.

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

If you love the PG so much, I would personally opt for the PG++

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

My opinion, no rewind. Just thought I'd toss in my two cents (that aren't being used to gauge pickup height)...

Re: Suggestions for Rewinds.

I don't know how it will sound, but somehow I know that you really have to have Option #2.
