Suggestions for Vintage 30 speaker installation

Hey guys, Im looking for suggestions.

I just bought a Celestian Vintage 30 60 watt speaker, lightly broke-in, and plan to use it for some blues/hard rock recordings. Now I have a few amp options to install this speaker into, and am not bound to specifically use one or the other. The whole goal behind this is to try some new sounds with a well recognized speaker. Traditionall I have been using a Marshall TSL60 through 1960A cab with G12T-75 speakers, which sound a little dull on record.

Here are a few of the amps I can install this speaker into, and would like to hear your suggestions and educated guesses, as to which amp should accept this speaker best, in a positive way.

Blackstar HT60 Soloist
Blackstar HT5R
Marshall TSL 60 through JCM 1960A cabinet (4x12 G12T-75, change one speaker out for a Vintage 30)
Fender Blues Jr
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe
Fender vintage MDF 4x12 cab
Mesa Boogie - Electra Dyne
Hughes and Kettner - Warp 7

I am not able to spend days at a time trying different combinations of speaker amp, unfortunately :(

or, is there a company that makes a solid wood 1x12 cabinet without speaker? Should I be running a pair of V30's or is one typically sufficient for micing?

Out of the amps listed I would say HT60. Not sure what speakers are already in that though. If ED has a C90, nevermind. The V30 will really open up that amp. I loved my HT40 with a Creamback (for reference). I was able to achieve a lot of different sounds/genres. I played mostly alternative rock, modern rock but did throw in some blues and classic rock. Amp nailed all those tones. That amp is more Marshall than your TSL.

They only other suggestion is getting a decent 1x12 cab. Avatars new go in the $300+ range, used mesas are the same, same with new orange 1x12. You could certainly go Seismic and a few other brands for cheaper, but some are front loading which will skew the tone and sound beam.

That's a good point about the Seismic and front/rear loading. I've eyed them for a 1x12 and probably will grab one one day but up until now I have never bought one. However, I think I've seen some info on them not coming with speaker mounting hardware, so there is possibly that to add on. Whether they do or don't, it seems as if the T-nuts could be installed for either front or rear mount but I don't know, I haven't given it much thought. At any rate, I only suggest the Seismic as a fair priced cab as a test cab ... especially if you think you can find use for a 1x12 down the road. They are 1/2" birch cabs, not 3/4" like the Avatar and others so certainly not the best or heaviest cabinets made.

How do front and rear loaded speakers differ in tone?

The only thing I can gather is that with rear loading you have the baffle in front of the driver which would affect dispersion and reflection to some degree. With front loading, you don't. Good luck finding a consensus on what the differences in tone really are. I've never done an A/B and have probably only owned a couple of guitar cabinets with front loaded drivers so I never have given it much thought.

I'm confused. Do you already own the amps? Or did you buy the speaker first? In which case, that's akin to putting the cart before the horse...

I BOUGHT A NEW "lUKE" 2-12" cabinet from Seismic Audio 8 months ago and it came with the wiring for 2 speakers and the screws that hold the speakers in the cabinet..and of course the jack plate on backside of cab,so in other words it came with everything needed except for the speakers..it sounds great and they ship fast!! I like the quality as well and I currently use it daily,and the price was excellent..the T-nuts in my 2-12" cab are in the front but you can move them to the back of the baffle board for rear mount.

Good to know. I had read a review which stated that the baffle wasn't drilled and no speaker mounting hardware was included. Wouldn't matter to me, I have T-nuts and mounting bolts. Anyway, it must have been an oversight during manufacturing. I knew that the input dish and wire was included.

I saw it on Ebay at a starting price of $149 and nobody else bid so I got it for that and it was at my front door in less than 2 days! I think these are regular priced at $179.99 but still excellent!

Seismic is good about shipping. I bought a couple of cases from them over the years. Checking ebay, it looks like you can get a better deal on ebay than buying direct. But they often have a discount code for buying direct so it's probably a wash unless you bid on a box on auction.

I like Vintage 30s in fender amps. Most fenders sound scooped on the midst to me, so the vintage 30 brings some midst to the table.

I have a Luke 1x12, black with wheat grille. It does have the t-nuts and screws for top mounting. The tolex isn't cut for the screw holes though. The screw heads are a bit small and I feared that they would pass through the mounting holes. I put washers on it.

So the T-nuts just come with the cabinet, uninstalled, and you install them yourself? Or they are already installed and the Tolex was just applied over them?

T-nuts are installed on the inside for a top mount. If you want to bottom mount, you have to use your own screws.
