Everyone should own a SM57 for sure in addition to that though you could get something like an AT2035 and track guitars and vocals with it. With either mic a good mic pre will make the difference between passable and really usable.

I'm a big fan of the Sennheiser e906 for guitar. I'm not as big a fan of it's cheaper and not nearly as good little brother the e609. I'd go for an SM57 in the same price range of the 609.
As for vocal mics, pick up a good Beta 58 used and you've got a killer microphone for vocals of all kinds (deep, raspy and loud, wispy, female, etc) and it's great at other applications as well.

The e906 has a filter switch for different tones and are designed after the old favorite, a Sennheiser 409 which was very common on horns and percussion so I'd imagine it'll handle it very well. The 906 can handle very high SPL's but I don't know how it'd do on a bass drum, but I'm sure there are several forums that cover this information.

live vocals: sm58 or the sennheiser e835, they just cant be beat. if your vocalist is of brighter timbre, go with the e835.
studio/recording vocals: i'd shoot for a condenser here, Blue has some good ones.
guitars: like they already said, e906.
