Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

The custom has a ceramic magnet, which helps it get tighter than the aldrich. It’s hard for me to predict what it would be like in dropped tuning.

Ha!
I really like my QR.
But all of the amps you are looking at are great. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Probably true. Now I just need a job so I can justify spending the money I have set aside.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

I got the Aldrich set, the price was too good to pass. Maybe I'll make a demo when I install them. Thanks for all the replies!

I listened to a few clips of the bands you listed in your first post...I’m curious to hear what the Aldrich set sounds like for that type of music.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

He recommended the Uppercut model (which is triple ceramic ~17k seems like black winter) but payment and shipping is all problem. In their website they want a receipt from a Russian bank and I couldn't find any international shipping option. I asked it in email but he didn't say anything about it.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

One tip is to lower the screws if it’s not tight enough btw. The aldrich is pretty sensitive to heights. Anyways I think you’ll be happy with them

Strange.
I just ask him for the price with shipping and then I send payment with PayPal.
Don’t go by what the website says.

Thanks for the advice! Does the screw setting have a subtle effect?

I can't use PayPal (because of government) so, anyways it's going to be problem for me. I'm still really curious about fokin pickups but maybe in the future I have a chance to try them I don't know.

Ahhh...understood.

Here’s the way I perceive it (for any humbucker):

Height of the pickup: closer to strings makes it louder and stronger, but past a certain point loses clarity. This is the first thing to set. Higher output pickups like the Aldrich often need to be slightly lowered. Mine is about 2.2mm from the string when pressed down at the last fret (bass side) and 1.9mm on treble side.

Screw height: lower increases clarity, but doesn’t affect the loudness as much as lowering the pickup does. Raising screws will add some beef. Since I use hybrid 9-46 strings, I slightly raised the high string screws by about a 1/2 counterclockwise turn, and actually lowered the low string ones quite a bit. Maybe 3/4 of a full clockwise turn. Definitely use your ears though as each guitar will be different.

Many say screws are to adjust the output of individual strings which can of course be done, but in my experience this is secondary to tone shaping

Thanks for the info it'll be very useful for me!

Now, I have another question, since it's a zebra set, I'm thinking about how it's gonna look. Here's the image that I modeled. When it's normally wired I think there's too much black for this guitar and it looks best to me when both humbuckers reversed (4th photo) but I don't know how it will affect the sound in especially bridge position. Bridge screws turned inside might not good for me but, can I adjust it and get the clear, tight tone anyways? Will it be a problem for me?

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Also currently, I have Dimarzio Virtıal Vintage 2.1 DP401 (early area 58) in the middle. It's good sounding pickup but I couldn't decide HH or HSH wiring. With VLX91 switch I can use standard HSH or HH with Bridge Humbucker/Both Inner Coils/Both Humbuckers/Neck Parallel/Neck Humbucker configuration. I haven't tried neck parallel option. If it sounds like Neck&Middle or Neck split that's good for me because I like them. Even though I like it's sound in 3rd or 4th positions, I can't get on well with the middle pickup because it sometimes distrupt my picking.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

So you’re thinking about lowering the middle or removing it?

I have an HSS and SSS and actually it took some time to get used to it but I can pick outside of the middle pup area easily now. But if it bothers you, then I guess lowering it is your best bet.

As for the coloring, I actually liked that first normal wiring pic the most, lol. As for reversing the pups, I would assume it’s going to have minimal impact on tone, but maybe someone who’s done it can chime in?

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

I use middle pickup as low as I can. But I'm indecisive about this two wiring options. As I said if the parallel neck sounds good, it'd be better for me.
And yes, if someone tried it, the impressions would be very useful for me. Somebody says it doesn't affect the tone, someone says it'll be bassier because of the screws, I don'T know.

I think the only way to know for sure is to experiment with it and see what YOU like.
