Sunlight and Guitar Finish?

I like to keep my guitar on a stand in my home office and it’s next to a window. Will sunlight fade the finish? It’s in a corner so it doesn’t get direct exposure to the sun’s rays.

Yes it will damage the finish over time, but very slowly. You only really need to worry about it for white guitars, as they often combine with sweat and dust to create a urine looking finish.

On most guitars, I'd say no. I do have an early 2000's Brian Moore, where the deep blue dye faded to a milky purple over like 10 years, but this is the only guitar that I've seen that has experienced this over such a short period of time. It was never left out of the case, either. I'd ask them to re-paint it if they were still a company. It was an expensive custom guitar.

I guarantee you, yes. The clear coat will turn to yellow in less than 4 years. In your case, the binding will noticeably be yellower.

Urine looking? No, no, it's called "aged white." Fender charges extra for that, ya know...

Bursts will also fade due to direct sunlight. Cherry Sunburst Les Pauls hanging in music store windows is what created the Lemonburst as the red would fade over time leaving only the amber.

Sunlight isn't great, but the deer droppings will be far worse.

Lacquer would yellow, but that's a poly-finished Epi. I seriously doubt that indirect sunlight will have much if any effect.

Wait a minute...is that an Epiphone? Oh don't bother ... Different case it it were a Gibson (don't even think about displaying it on a stand).

Is that like a redneck way of referring to a sommelier? [emoji3][emoji3]

I’ve seen sunlight discolor the crap out of things that were never in the path of direct light. I think ultraviolet light gets around. The frames on my ASC SoundPlanks look disgusting. Nothing on guitars yet, though I’m not taking any chances. I have UV-blocking film on the windows in that room. It’s clear as glass but is supposed to block 99% of UV.
