Super Champ XD

Experiences? Found one at a good price and thinking about grabbing it... sometimes it is difficult to play at home with 7 other people in the house (6 kids) and only a 100 watt amp. :)

How loud are the cleans? If I wanted to take it to practice would it keep up without breaking up? Thanks. ;)

Re: Super Champ XD

My SCXD is the longest standing amp I have without flipping, if that says anything. The stock speaker is going to flub out on you if you try to dime it with a band, but if you get something more efficient you should be good, provided your drummer is not too heavy handed.

FWIW I was using an Emi Ramrod for a while (that I am now selling) but I pulled it a few weeks ago to go back to my Weber Sig Alnico.. I just prefer the earlier breakup.

Re: Super Champ XD

I recently traded most of my amps in towards my EVH 5150 III - and the Fender SCXD is the only one I kept. It's a great little amp, takes pedals extremely well. Does the Fender thing great, not bad Marshall tone either for a little 15 watter. Great for home use, withthe smaller speaker I don't know how well it would be for a live setting

Re: Super Champ XD

I have one that I sometimes use for rehearsals. It is lightweight and sounds great. The built-in effects are just so-so, but it's a nice convenient package. Easier to lug around than your G100, too. It will never replace my Blues Jr. from a balls standpoint, but for what I paid and how I use it, it doesn't need to.

Re: Super Champ XD

You can crank that first channel to about 6 or 7 and keep things pretty clean but yes I do remember things getting flubby from there.

If the price is good I'd say jump on it but it it's much more than $100 I'd say no way because the fender mustang 1 does just about all the same clean tones and doesn't have tubes to worry about.

Re: Super Champ XD

I was lucky enough to win the drawing at User Group Day for a Vibro Champ XD.
I like using it when I want a pretty authentic Fender Deluxe Reverb tone at bedroom volume. But the louder it goes, the more the top end compresses as the tubes get cookin.

These amps also have a 4 ohm output jack, so you can unplug it's speaker, then use a speaker cable out to a better speaker cab. The little tube amp sounds much bigger plugged into my 8 ohm Bogner 212 cab. There's a slight impedence mismatch, but it's probably OK.

I also like using it with a bigger amp in a stereo setup. I can put the Vibro Champ on the other side of the room and get a big stereo spread.

I think they're worth buying if it's cheap and used. If I were buying new, I'd be more inclined to buy the Mustang II or III. They have more useable tones and a bigger speaker.

Re: Super Champ XD

That amp and an Emi Raging Cajun speaker seems to be the grab-n-go choice for a lot of players. Those amps wake up as you get past 7 on the dial, and give up some power tube OD, if that's a sound you ever need. It makes some of the models much better sounding. Into a better cab, they just kick ass.
