Super D in bridge, neck options?

Gonna try a Super Distortion in the bridge as it's a long overdue pup choice. I'd like a neck that gives somewhat fat lead tones, but not too dark. Maybe something with some glassy quality to cut through? I know the PAF Pro is popular, not sure if it fits my description though.

Can't say for sure what this will go in, I've got options ;) It'll be 24 fret, but not sure the scale length, either 24.75 or 25.5. I'll play mostly high gain rock and metal. Clean tones are't a big concern, juicy lead ones are.

So many good choices:

PAF, PAF 36th, PAF Pro (good call for what you want IMO), Super2, we can go on....

Get the Super2. Back in the day, we'd just throw another SuperD in there. Listen to some Gary Richrath for those fat loud sounds of lead neck solos.

I have a full shred I use with mine. I swapped the poles for all filisters.

It is bright and clear with the tone or volume up, and responds to the guitar controls better than any other neck pickup I have tried.

Another SuperD in the neck wired in parallel is a good option too. Or make it switchable between series and parallel.

A Super II or Dimarzio 36th Anniversary are well proven choices. You could also try a SD in the neck with a capacitor for bass cut or a SD in parallel.

I know the Super II gets lots of love and higher output should be fine for me, but it seemed like it'd be a bit bright for what I want?

Air Norton or Air Zone....maybe too dark for both those?

Parallel wiring of the SD in the neck sounds interesting, and it's something I'd like to try (or parallel in any number of pups). However I'd probably buy another dedicated neck pup as I want to pup collection to grow anyway :)

The 36th anny is a great pickup. I had one in my LP for a while but swapped it out for experimentation purposes.
I won’t sell it because one of these days I’ll find a home for it.

It really isn't overly bright even in the bridge position.

Heard a few Super II clips, not quite as bright as I thought it may be.

Anyone have thoughts about the Liquifier?

Super 2 is Super in the neck./. Not too bright at all.

A SuperD wired for Series/Parallel is a great choice to go from crunch to clean with the amp set right...

Out of the PAF 36th Anniversary and PAF Pro, I would choose the Pro to go with the Super D, no doubt. The 36th Anni is a great sounding PAF-type, but I feel the output of the Pro would balance better with the Super D in the bridge.

I have a Jackson Dinky with a Super D in the bridge and Super 2 in the neck. The Super 2 is not too bright in this guitar.

I really like this pickup combo personally. The Super 2 is a surprisingly flexible pickup. It has lots of balls on OD1 and OD 2 on my JVM and really pushes the amp. Switching to the crunch channel on my JVM, it calms down nicely and yields very nice mid gain tones.


Going to the clean channel on my JVM surprised me. The Super 2 sounds really good. Not passable, really good. Has a nice sparkle to it. It is not muddy. Not at all. Articulate. Sweet. This pickup has inspired me to spend more time on my green channel.

Once I got a Super 2, I can understand why Jerry Garcia had this pickup in all three positions on his guitar. It really is a flexible pickup. The specs and marketing description do not do it justice.

Liquifire! Great singing leads, articulate,
and cleans up beautifully. Have mine in
a 24 fret PRS. This is also the pup John
Petrucci uses. Comes in at 10.75k with
an A5 so you shouldn’t have any drop
off. Awesome pup!

Super 2 ( that was designed to go in the neck with the super D) or go Randy Rhodes with a PAF pro

randy rhodes and a paf pro? pretty sure that never happened since he died before the pup was around. i think it was the super d and paf he was using

Does Dimarzio have a neck pup the recommend to use with the Super D? May be too generic in thinking there, just curious. I don't think I've seen a "set" sold with the Super D in the bridge. I think I'll stay Dimarzio for this guitar, maybe I should think out of the box and mix-n-match, but my guitars have always been broken up between SD and Dimarzio (and 1 lone EMG 81/85 Ibanez). Old habits die hard.

Anyone tried a Super 2 with another magnet, say A5? Could that make it a bit darker? Just the tinkerer in me wondering...

I modded a Super 2 with A5 and virtual vintage mod. The magnet was glued down so had to take the whole pup apart any pry/slice it off. I was also told that super 2 with A5 = paf pro, by Frank Falbo IIRC. I found super 2 in the neck to be too similar to the super d bridge to be useful.

End result for me was between a paf and paf pro, a bit less cocked wah sound than a paf pro, a little clearer/sharper than a paf. I have kept that combo together, I like the look in double cream on a black lester.

I also have a super d/paf combo in another guitar (gold bobbins on a white Orville Les Paul Custom).

I would have said the PAF Pro, but you're worried about it being a little too bright. The Air Norton may be a good pick here.
