Super Reverb goodness

Jomo's Nimions
After pulling V1 and swapping the phase inverter (V6) for V1's 12AX7, I finally got to crank the Super wide open today.

Holy. Crap.

No matter which guitar I plugged in it sounded incredible. Tons of crunch and chimey cleans with the volume rolled back. I know, I know... Duh, it's an old Fender. From this afternoon back, I'd like to retract everything I've ever said about guitar tone, as I've officially been schooled :)

Re: Super Reverb goodness

After owning dozens of amps, including Fenders and their clones, my favorites are the P2P Pro Reverb and Super Reverb.

When it comes to the best of the best, those two rule. They're basically the same 2 6L6 amp with 212 or 410.

As a matter of fact, Seymour's best tone would be his Antiquity loaded Schecter Elite, 35th, or JB original into an 808 OD into a 65 blackface Pro Reverb.

Silverface. I don't know the exact year, but based on the logo design, "Super Reverb" font, and lack of MV or pull knobs, it's 68-72. It seems tougher to nail down exactly in that period.

My dad said he was OK with any reversible mods, but aside from the tube swaps, I don't really want to change anything. I have a Green Rhino on the way, and can't wait to get some of that break up without having to repaint the living room.

Re: Super Reverb goodness

I've always loved the Super Reverb. Great amp. Kinda big and heavy (awkward to transport), but also BIG on tone. Tube swaps and speaker swaps can make a monster out of it. My favorites are pre-'68 blackface models.

Re: Super Reverb goodness

i love supers but they are big and heavy and too loud for me. hell i cant even crank my bf deluxe reverb with the crex speaker most of the time. there is something magic about a good tube amp cranked to the point its screaming and until youve spent a good amount of time with one you never know how good it is

Re: Super Reverb goodness

^ That is so, so true.

It was rare that I could even crank my '67 Bandmaster, but when I could, its tone was in another ballpark. Man, I wish I still had that thing.

Re: Super Reverb goodness

I've done a little research, but wanted to run it by you guys. The Super's speakers run at 2 ohms. If I wanted to try a 2x12 cab, as long as it's 2 ohms or higher, I'm ok, right?

Re: Super Reverb goodness

if you go above 4ohms things will get weird since the power tubes will be running way out of their comfort zone. shouldnt hurt anything but might not sound good and dont go below 2 ohms

Re: Super Reverb goodness

Could I run the proper value resistor in parallel with the speakers to get it to 2 ohms to keep the power tubes happy?

Re: Super Reverb goodness

I would think so. Just make sure it can handle the wattage.

Update:

I finally got to spend some time cranked up with the Green Rhino. It feels like when I was 14 and had just started playing.
