Supro Sahara

I really can't say with words how much I love this amp. Designed by Zinky, it's a 1X12 combo (with Sola speaker) 25 watt, class A circuit, faithfully replicated from a 1958 Supro design.

The controls are volume, treble, bass & mids. :headbang: No master volume (meaning it's a loud ****er even at it's lowest clean setting) & no effects loop.

A good tele into it, instantly recalls vintage Jimmy Page tones (especially LZ1) A strat or LP JR w/ p-90's reminds me of Hendrix (Are You Experienced) & good Les Paul/humbucker guitar sounds a bit like Joshua Homme in a way (think Song For The Deaf).

Low settings yield that 'just before crunch' chime that only a gr8 class A circuit can deliver. Turning it up goes into a warm overdrive that just 'barks' like a maddog.

Extremely dynamic & the mids are soooo rich. Plays fine with pedals & I always get a "what the hell is that thing your using?" after gigs.

I was wondering if any other members here had tried one out (or bought one) & if they have any experience with the older Supros, like the Thunderbolt, Corsica or any others.

 methinks Mr. Zinky is one of the best out there, designing amps today....RAWK!

Re: Supro Sahara

Sounds cool. I'd like to check one out sometime. I thought the Blue Velvet was pretty nice at a reasonable price.

Re: Supro Sahara

i have seen some of those around and I would love to check one out. I wouldn't mind building one from a kit if there is such a kit out there. Where did you get it if you don't mind me asking.

feel free to pm me if there is something you don't want to share with everyone. any more info would be appreciated.

Re: Supro Sahara

no sweat, I bought mine from Cowtown Guitars in Las Vegas http://www.cowtownguitars.com/ you can find a bit more info from http://www.suprousa.com/

It's not built from a kit, it's a new version of an ol thing (handwritten serial # 0012) designed by Bruce Zinky (the guy who designed Fenders' best amps in the 90's).

I corresponded with Mr. Zinky after buying it & he told me that it's a replica (I believe that's the phrase he used) of a Supro circuit from 1958 (although I don't know if Supro had more than one model in 1958).

I don't know if it's possible to find the schematic for the 58' Supro, but that's the one he told me he used.

If you see one at a store (& If you have a great Tele), don't hesitate to try it out. I think it could handle jazz, country, rock & gritty electric blues better than many, although not metallica-metal or dethmetal kinda stuff, & on the same note, it didn't respond to EMG pickups (they hit the amp a little too hard) nearly as well as more vintag-ish style equipped guitars.

Remember the 'blooming' notes in the bridge of 'How Many More Times'? That insane buttery rich midrange is to be found here.
