Surf Shred

sorry. I can't offer any yet, but who CAN do it?

I've heard Gary Hoey described as such, but I just tried listening to some of him and it really didn't sound particularly surfy or shreddy, unless I just caught the wrong clips...

Anyway, yeah... kind of embarassing, but I'm attempting to learn shredding... :laugh2: It's going ok, except that my only reference is the John Petrucci DVD, which is full of a lot of exercises, but nothing musical (or nothing I percieve as musical :laugh2:) I'm not a big DT fan... at all. As you probably know.

...is it weird to want to be able to shred despite having no desire to listen to shred itself? I think I could do cool things with it if I got my technique up... I can still hear a metronome clicking in my head for some reason.

So Surf Shred. Who professes anyone who fits that style? I need some actual songs to attempt to learn to get myself on par before I venture out and do something else.

My problem with most shred is that the actual song behind it is typically given either too much or too little attention... try me. Any suggestions? I just need something I find listenable to practice with. Also, how about any shredding without distortion... cause that's the way I like it.

(shredding does sound better on a Mustang, BTW :D)

Re: Surf Shred

For straight up surf shred, definately listen to **** Dale. Misirlou, Surf Beat, King of the Surf Guitar, and stuff like that should get you warmed up on it. The only problem with playing this kind of music is that it really only teaches you to tremolo pick.

If you want shredding that's very tasteful and fits the song, you can check out Al Dimeola (hell, he shreds on an acoustic) - especially see if you can pick up his recordings with John McLaughlan and Paco DeLucia.

You might want to look up Monte Montgomery as well, he does some amazing acoustic shreddy type stuff that still fits well into a song. There are some versions of him playing Little Wing and Sultans of Swing that are pretty awesome.

Re: Surf Shred

I don't really consider **** to be shred... Surf Def. I have a lot of him already. (exactly. With the trem picking)

I'll check those out ;)

Re: Surf Shred

I agree with GuitarStv - look into Al Di Meola, and try to find some Paco De Lucia. De Lucia is just mindblowing - great technique, and I love the music he plays.

Re: Surf Shred

Not being a shred guy myself (can't really stand must of that stuff) one shred song that really pleased me is a song by Guthrie Govan called Country Shred, really cool tone, it's kinda of a chicken picking thing. Sounds great and It's basiclly shreding, and if you enjoyed this one you must defenitly check Danny Gatton, that man was amazing! The guy make a tele do anything.
I know this isn't surf shred BUT it sounds great and it has a very clean/twangy sound. Country picking can be kick ass fast but it's harder to play, not just because it's clean sounding, so you need a lot of precision in your playing (no distortion to cover up your ass), but also because it's mainly fingerpicking takes a lot to learn right.
You might also wanna check some Paul Gilbert licks and just play them clean and slow at first, he does have a great technique without sounding boring or excessive.
Main point about shreding just practice ALOT it gets boring and frustrating but what doesn't?!
If I remenber some other players/songs I'll post them

Re: Surf Shred

I'll check a bit of the country.

His website is funny as hell, he's crazy.
You could check out his Best Of it's a good way of starting to know him, Burning Organ, King of Clubs and Alligator Farm are also very cool albuns.
He has got a few instructional videos that are definitly worth checking:
