Re: surge protectors ???

I ws totally just about to ask this question. I also was wondering if some were better than others and if some would be more appropriate for different applications: my home theater, guitar, bass, DJ, and computer/printer setups. Thanks from me also for any info.

Re: surge protectors ???

There are surge protectors... and there are surge protectors. Some are worth every nickel you pay for them. How much is your gear worth?

Re: surge protectors ???

I just use the regular surge protectors you can get from Best Buy. You should try to get the highest joule rating to for maximum safety. There are other surge protectors that have voltage regulators, I think these provide a more stable power supply. These types can also reduce the noise you hear from the amp too. I don't really care much about the noise, but you might want to try one out if want to.

Re: surge protectors ???

The best part about surge protectors is there usually is a light on them showing if the ground on an outlet works or not.

Re: surge protectors ???

I use a rackmount Furman Power Conditioner for my rig. Better safe than sorry.

I agree... and after you spend the money for a surge protector that will actually protect your gear - you'll find you're spending as much as a good power conditioner - which does more than just block surges.

Re: surge protectors ???

i use a simple single outlet belkin for my amp. i noticed that when i have my dishwasher on and i'm playing i can hear the dishwasher pump motor interfere with my amp. i bought a surge protector and it sounds good now while i wash dishes. no noise.

the surge protector also has a built in power filter which streamlines out spikes/dips in power.

ya just get a quality surge protector asap

unless you have a rack don't worry about power conditioners; surge protector is more versatile. I have had alot of "monster" products - nothing wrong there - I don't own a monster surge protector but would opt for that...any weblinks to the products online that you are comparing?

Re: surge protectors ???

so if i'm not using a "rack " system , a surge protector is not needed? is that what you're saying? my bad , you said power conditioners ,oops. i dont use a rack system , so i don't need a power conditioner ???

Re: surge protectors ???

IMO and IME, I would use something that is a conditioner and protector. The conditioner part will make sure your amp/pedals and whatnot always see the same voltage regardless of any drops or spikes from the wall as well as remove any unwanted AC line noise. The protector is a no brainer.

Last time I was at GC I saw some non-rackmount protectors, the looked like a normal power strip. Made by Furman I think. Not sure if they were conditioners/protectors or just protectors.

Not true. A power conditioner and a surge protector are two different beasts. I'm not sure if all conditioners from Furman are rack mounted.
