Swamp ash

Re: Swamp ash

This is one of the better comparisons I've found on the net.......some recorded tones using 2 G&L guitars of the same model. 1 ash and 1 Alder. The necks are swapped out too.....so you have the ash and alder body with the same neck attached.

Good post.

It would be interesting to hear the same comparison done with two different alder bodies or two different swamp ash bodies .

I'd guess we'd hear a difference there too.

Re: Swamp ash

The thing, to me to keep in mind is this.

Alder is VERY consistent from one piece to the other in terms of both weight and tone.

Ash on the other hand is not...some of it is very heavy and some of it is very light and the tone from one piece to another is equally varied.

Re: Swamp ash

Is there even such a thing as a hard definition of what Swamp ash is, as opposed to other Ash that look cool?

Re: Swamp ash

I've got an alder jazzmaster and strat, and a swamp ash tele, two piece. Fwiw, the tele is brighter, and a little bit sweeter, but the strat (only one with a maple board) oddly enough is the fattest sounding one. Acoustically the jazzmaster is loudest but amplified the tele is my favorite of the three. Very resonant and lively especially at full tilt on my 18w.
