switch selector help!

hello guys, i got a noobie question. My Fender strat makes a click noise when the strings are vibrated while i move the switch selector. However, it is perfectly quiet when the strings are not vibrated while i move the switch selector. Volume and Tone are turned to max while i do these things.

Is this normal or is there a problem somewhere that i should fix?

Thanks!

Re: switch selector help!

You could clean your switch, if it's more of a pop and/or crackle. Dirty contacts can make noise by causing an intermittant connection. If you decide to try it, contact cleaner should available at a nearby electronics store. Sometimes a light click seems to be normal for strat switches, though.

Thanks for replying..

So it is not possible for it to be perfectly quiet when moving the switch selector of a strat like how i could with a Les Paul? What im experiencing now is a single crack noise (the kind you would hear when you adjust the plug-in cable of your guitar input while the amplifier is on) when i move the switch selector with the strings vibrated.

I also have another question. Is it normal for the 1,3,5 positions to be louder than the 2 and 4 positions of the switch selector? It seems that my 1,3,5 positions are of the same volume which is significantly louder than my 2 and 4 positons which are of the same volume too..

Not only is it possible, thats what should be happening. All 3 of my Fender-style switched guitars are dead silent when switching. It sounds like maybe your switch is worn. Is it old, or new? Some Caig Labs Deoxit, (available from Radio Shack), is the best cleaner/conditioner there is. IMHO.

Its not unusual for there to be a volume change in positions #2 and #4, but it should be subtle. If its drastic, that could still be part of your switch problem. I'd look at that first, then go from there.
