SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

I've heard and read a little on the SX line of guitars. Are they as good a value for the money as I've read, or is that just the sales pitch at work?

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

No, they really are worth the money, and can be made better with upgrades.

Excellent linky, I6. Can't believe I missed that thread. I'll keep my eyes open when I get back to Tokyo and see if I can't find one.

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

I've had an SX Tele in Butterscotch, for about four years now. It's my favorite guitar to jam on at home, and is easily worth way more than I paid.

The neck is nice and chunky and plays great, and It sounds amazing acoustically. Seriously rings like a damn bell. One hell of a nice piece of wood regardless of the price, and a very pleasant surprise.

I'm currently thinking about upgrading the pickups, with a set of GFS Vintage, just to see if I could make it a bit better. But honestly, even the stock pups are pretty good, even if they are just cheapies. I've even heard quite a few people say that they prefer them, believe it or not. Of course that's just a matter of taste.

As for the hardware, it's also on the cheap side of course. But, it's not THAT bad. The tuners work fine, and the bridge is plenty good enough.

I really want a '52 Reissue, and I'll get one one day, but when I bought this there was no way I could afford one. My SX helped relax my Tele GAS, and I've gotten countless hours of pleasure out of it.

I also had a Agile TV Yellow DC Junior copy. I don't know what I was thinking when I sold it. And now they don't even make them anymore.(This was before they had to change the body styles and headstocks, and looked MUCH closer to a Gibson.)

Hi There,

I own a SX Strat.

They are nice if you consider their price tag.

BUT...

You must take extra care about its building quality.

I'll place some shots of my SX strat before i modified it heavyly;

Electronics was another weak point, either. All parts must be changed.

However, if you like to you may achieve something like this;

Take a look for its neck pocket. That was really terrible so that i needed to fix it.

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

I've got two SX Tele's which I modified. They are worth every penny.

You wouldn't believe how badly I've been gassing for this:

But considering the shipping charges and import taxes I'd have to pay to actually get it here and it's just not affordable and probably not worth it. :(

Holy crimonoly! That is awesome. AND left-handed (which I am). I feel your GAS!

...wait, that didn't come out right...

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

I had one of the Les Paul copies. I really liked it. I changed the pots and put in a set of 59's and later A2pros. It sounded really good I thought. Frets a little rough but that canbe filed in a minute or so. I was really happy with it. I sold it to buy something else I have since sold. Some people complain about having to change pots and stuff. If you are on this forum then you most likelyvalready do that to any other guitar you have. I am going to get a tele from ROndo sometime

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

This is just f*cking cool, no matter the price.

I imagine you buy that for 140$, throw some new guts and pups in it for 200$, and you got yourself one SWEET, unique axe.

Re: SX Guitars (opinions wanted)

You ever play a Squier?

They're the same thing with a different headstock.

I own one...a Tele...it's fine...but it's not any better than a Squier.

Remember that "quality" and "what some guy on the internet prefers to play" are not the same thing. I prefer playing my beat-up old SG-X to a $7000 PRS Private Stock...partly because it's made of cheaper woods and isn't super fancy and already has a bunch of dings on it...

So yeah...they're great cheap korean or chinese knock-off guitars...if that's what you're looking for.

My SX is very different from any Squier I've ever played. I know what you're saying, though. And, your point on quality versus preference is valid.

As a side note, I borrowed a friends SG-X for a while a few years ago, and I didn't want to give it back. His has the Gibson branded stud mount Kahler, and I'm not sure what the pups were(he had a Duncan of some kind and a single coil installed in the neck position).

He wouldn't sell it to me, so I still threaten to break into his house and steal it. It WILL be mine one day. Oh yes. It will be mine.
