Takamine input jack

Hello all!

So here my scenario. I’m working on a Takamine acoustic G Series where there is a lot of cutting in and out. My guess is that the preamp is possibly going bye bye. I removed the input wire from the preamp and would like to test it.

Given how ridiculously expensive the preamp is, I wanted to test the input jack and be absolutely positive that it’s not the jack. Is there a way to test this jack???

Any other troubleshooting methods anyone can recommend????

Re: Takamine input jack

I'm 99% sure it is the jack, barring spilled beer in the preamp. :)

I would plug a guitar cord into the jack. Use a multimeter to probe the black and white wires at the terminals. Red wire s/b battery. Display low ohms. There should be no leakage, or infinite impedance. Wiggle the guitar cord. Does the impedance change? If it does, jack is bad.

That's where I would start...but I'm no expert.

Also, be sure that the battery is making good contact in the preamp box.

Good luck!

Good stuff from Bill here.

Just to cover all bases, if you haven’t already, make sure you’re using a known-good battery!

The one other area of potential failure outside of the preamp itself would be the saddle (I would presume it’s and under-bridge piezo or film) - there’s a possibility the wire between bridge and preamp is breaking and causing the intermittent sound.

If you can see the wire through the sound hole, give it a slight wiggle while the guitar is plugged in, see if it cuts in and out.

If you can’t see the wire (I don’t know Takamines well enough to know, sorry), you might be able to tap the bridge and see if you can hear it OK.

Note: on the Fishman Ellipse Blend I have on my Martin HD28, if the strings are off, I can lift the bone saddle and see the film and wire connector - don’t know if you can do that with Takamine.

Final thought, intermittent sound could be caused by oxidation of the jack, so while you’re working on it, worth agitating with some electrical contact cleaner.

Best of luck

Thank you guys!! I’m probably going to wind up replacing the jack just to say I did. I’m leaning more toward the jack doing the cutting in and out.

The only reason that I was curious if it was the preamp, is because originally when the problem was produced, I would jiggle the volume switch which would also cause the guitar to go in and out.

When I dove in further I was getting issues with the guitar cutting in and out when touching the guitar cord when plugged into the input jack when jiggling it.
